Over the course of his legal career, Andy Carpenter has lost a few cases. But that doesn't mean he forgets his clients. Andy has always been convinced that Joey Desimone, a man convicted of murder nine years ago, was innocent and believes that Joey's family's connections to organized crime played a pivotal role in his conviction. While there isn't much Andy can do for him while he serves out his prison sentence, Joey suggests that he check up on Joey's elderly uncle. He'd rather not, but as a favor to Joey, Andy agrees to take his dog, Tara, on a few visits.
The old man's memory is going, but when Andy tries to explain why he's there, it jogs something in the man's mind, and his comments leave Andy wondering if Uncle Nick is confused, or if he just might hold the key to Joey's freedom after all this time. Andy grabs on to this thread of possibility and follows it into a world where the oath of silence is stronger than blood ties, and where people will do anything to make sure their secrets are kept.

Never read any of the print versions to me Grover Gardner is Andy Carpenter. My favorite characters are Andy and of course Marcus.
None this is just one really great story, with a real twist at the end NO SPOILERS FROM ME.
Grover Gardner is one of my favorite narrators, he does characters and emotions really well. You always know who's speaking.
I love this series, I've listened to many of the first few several times already. I know I'll listen to this again. There's not enough hours in the day to listen and do my job too. (sad to say)
I hope more Andy Carpenter books will be written, with Grover Gardner doing the narration.
I'm a sucker for mysteries with dogs (love PT Duetermann's german shepherds) and the Andy Carpenter series is pretty good stuff, although a little on the light side. Andy always knows something we don't, so the ending is always a surprise and that's a good thing. All in all, good entertainment.
Always consistently good. Always makes me chuckle. Narrator is absolutely the best on the planet. I love the simple stories and the subtle wit.
I stumbled upon this series and love it.
Andy is my favorite character in every book.
Grover does a great job at identifying each character.
There's always a laugh in store with Andy.
This story line was one of the most interesting and satisfying of the series so far. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I didn't. Mr. Rosenfelt got me with this one. Plus the fact that I'm a Jersey girl makes this series even more enjoyable because I can relate and remember places and attitudes of the area. I'm one book away from the end and will be waiting for the next book. This is also a series that each book can be on it's own. You done lose any history. But I would suggest following the series because it's just FUN!
You love mysteries, you like great characters, you want a believable story, you want the detectives to be smart enough to get the clue, but you want the book to never end. You want to listen to a reader who gets the book, the characters, and the whole package. If so, you owe it to yourself to listen to all the Andy Carpenter books by David Rosenfelt. However, do not bother with the non-series books - they are really not good.

Maybe in the middle, but of a certain type it ranks high. Rosenfelt's books are entertaining.
No. The overall tone of a Rosenfelt book is such that you know it will work out fine in the end -- but remain interested in how that happens.
His somewhat odd voice is perfect for Rosenfelt's writing. He captures what I think is the spirit of the books.
Not that I remember, but I am writing this review a good many weeks (and mysteries) later.
I will continue to read or listen to Rosenfelt for light entertainment. Maybe a guy's version of chick lit....
sports announcer, cyclist, enjoys to travel and the outdoors.
Another good book by Rosenfelt, I enjoyed it, just like the rest of the series.
I like the whole series, and this is no different. Andy Carpenter, the reluctant, wise cracking, dog loving, defense attorney. Start with the first in the series.
This is another great collaboration of Rosenfelt and Gardener. Its laugh out lout funny with some surprises at the end.
Grover Gardener is great, the lines are great-keep them coming!
