Publisher's summary

In a riveting debut thriller that has drawn comparisons to masters of the genre like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, Brian Freeman weaves obsession, sex, and revenge into a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and shocking plot twists from the first minute to the last.

Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is suffering from an ugly case of deja vu. For the second time in a year, a beautiful teenage girl has disappeared off the streets of Duluth, Minnesota, gone without a trace, like a bitter gust off Lake Superior. The two victims couldn't be more different. First it was Kerry McGrath, bubbly, sweet 16. And now Rachel Deese, strange, sexually charged, a wild child. The media hounds Stride to catch a serial killer, and as the search carries him from the icy stillness of the northern woods to the erotic heat of Las Vegas, he must decide which facts are real and which are illusions. And Stride finds his own life changed forever by the secrets he uncovers. Secrets that stretch across time in a web of lies, death, and illicit desire. Secrets that are chillingly immoral.

Pleasant surprise

An excellent whodunnit. the other reviews do a good job with the details. I just had to add my two cents praising this well written mystery. It's a keeper and I will definitely look forward to more from Mr.Freeman.

Hell of a story!!

Immoral is the first novel in Brian Freeman's Jonathan Stride detective series. I've listened to two later books in the series and two Freeman novels not in the Stride series. Immoral is far more intense than other Freeman novels; indeed it a freakishly intense novel. When one completes this novel he/she knows who Jonathan Stride is in detail. Even in the case of murders in this novel the perpetrators are as much victims as those they killed. Ultimately I suppose the story is about the negative power of sex when used for the purpose of control.

I was quite disappointed

His last novel, that I listen to, was much better in my opinion. This one was heavy into sex and less into mystery.

Good story. Wrong narrator.

Solid first installment of new series. I usually like Joe Barrett as a narrator. However, in this case, he did a poor job with “Fargo” and Mexican accents as well as voices for young women and children. Listening was painful so I used 1.5 speed to get through the story quickly.

great story ok narration

Interesting story. Kept me thinking. The narrator definitely has Midwestern accents down and can carry off some others however his voices of women are rather annoying. He tends to make them very nasal and shrill sounding. But I definitely did get the idea of different characters. Story is worth it though!

Never Disappointed!

Brian Freeman for the win, with another "keep you guessing" thriller. A+ for the first book in the Jonathan Stride series!

Too graphic

The plot line and characters were interesting. However there was too much graphic and gratuitous sex. And too many scenes with males peeing; describing the process. I read a different book by the author that was enjoyable. So I thought I'd start this series. Phooey, I'm done.

pleased

this is only my second book listening to. Author recommended. Started fine, then a little slow but picked up. I was very happy with the latter part of the book. Faster paced, kept me wanting more. I enjoyed the narrators voice. I will try the next book too. worth the listen.

Too much sex interferes with a wonderful, complex story and characters

Great story. Suspenseful. Captivating. Narrator does great work with male voices. Females are ok though. Not bad. Just not as good. My only complaint is that there was just so much sex and it felt very forced. Words fluctuated and had a very immature feel. The story was so complex that the excessive pubescent sex scenes took away. I found myself hitting the skip ahead buttons during those times.
