Publisher's Summary

Identical, based loosely on the myth of Castor and Pollux, is the story of identical twins, Paul and Cass Giannis, and the complex relationships between their family and their former neighbors, the Kronons. The audiobook focuses principally on events in 2008, when Paul is a candidate for Mayor of Kindle County, and Cass is released from the penitentiary, 25 years after pleading guilty to the murder of his girlfriend, Athena Kronon. The plot centers on the re-investigation of Athena's murder, carried out together by Evon Miller, an ex-FBI agent who is the head of security for the Kronon family business, and private investigator Tim Brodie, 81, a former homicide detective. The complex web of murder, sex, and betrayal - as only Scott Turow could weave - dramatically unfolds, and the chilling truth is revealed: People will believe what they want to believe.

    "Twins and the spin"

Eh, it was ok. Any story involving crime and identical twins has elements that you can expect; one covering up for the other, extreme devotion or hatred, one taking the place of the other and fooling the people they know, living life as one person interchangeably, etc. The application of those elements will depend on the rest of the story and it does here. It got bogged down in a lot of family history and personal insights that didn’t move the plot forward or heighten any sense of mystery, suspense or drama. It felt weighty and torpid. I did like that the primary investigator was brought back at 81 years old and proved effective. Usually those old dudes are relegated to porches and parlors, reeling off their tale of frustration or triumph to the new investigator who will no doubt, stand on his shoulders. This time Tim goes back over the evidence and shows that what he found could have been spun to damn or exculpate, but also that what he didn’t find was just out of reach. Nice touch, but it couldn’t save the book for me and while I remained interested, I wasn’t really riveted.

    Story
"Poorest Effort Yet by Scott Turow"
Would you try another book from Scott Turow and/or Henry Leyva?

I found the narrator only a C as compared to other narrators. Turow seems to be a hit and miss author and this story got bogged down in minutia and lesbian activity.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something by Lee Child, Michael Connelly, Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, but not Scott Turow

What character would you cut from Identical?

Evon Miller. She adds nothing to this story. If Turow wants to write about lesbian relationships he should find another genre than crime stories.

    "Scott Turow at his best"

I have now read enough of Turow's work that I usually get the punchline before I get to the end of the book.... But not so with this one. The tale is believable and complex and holds the reader's attention all the way through. I recommend it highly!

.... because the narration was so inane. Probably not fair to Turow, who has a great track record of publishing good legal procedurals.

    "SOMETIMES A STORY GETS OVEREXPLAINED"
What did you like best about Identical? What did you like least?

I LIKED MOST OF THE BOOK. UNTIL THE LAST CHAPTER OR SO. IT WAS FINE. I THINK THE CRIME WAS OVEREXPLAINED. IN DOING THIS THE BOOK GOT WATERED DOWN. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A FOUR STAR BOOK OTHERWISE.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I LIKED THE WAY IT WAS TOLD. EACH CHAPTER WAS AROUND A CHARACTER, I LIKED THAT. SO YOU KNOW WHAT WHAS HAPPENING TO EACH CHARACTER. I DID NOT LIKE THE WAY THINGS GOT OVEREXPLAINED IN THE END. LEAVE SOMETHING TO THE IMAGINATION.

Have you listened to any of Henry Leyva’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I DON'T KNOW BUT I LIKED HIS READING.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

YES I THINK IT WOULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE.

    Story
"Cluttered, Trite, Ethnocentric to a Fault"

Spent too much time sorting out the players in a muddled opening and it did not get better. I guess this has something to do with the genetics of identical twins, but frankly, who cares. Just because Turow tries to spice it up with politicians and billionaires, does not an interesting novel make. More evidence of a one-hit wonder!

    Story
    "Pretty predictable"
If you’ve listened to books by Scott Turow before, how does this one compare?

Does not match up to his others. I am a sucker for a good legal drama and this one was neither.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Henry Leyva?

Just about anyone. The narrator speaks clearly and has the right inflections but he is horribly miscast. He sounds like he is far too young to read this particular story.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Before listening yes afterwards no

    Any additional comments?

I usually think I have a book figured out and always pleasantly surprised when I find out that I was completely wrong. Well...not this time. Some of the clues left by Mr. Turow were like redwoods in the middle of the road.
I had the feeling that he added a few characters just for filler. I was also disappointed how a couple of characters just dropped off the map.
This book either needed to be longer or shorter. My vote is for shorter.
    Turow is better than this.

    Story
    "Not my favorite of Turow's"

I love Scott Turow's books. I could not wait for this new book to come out and bought it the night before I left on a trip. Yet, this book just didn't grab me at the beginning or get any better. While the writing is superb, the plot was somewhat silly. I figured out the simplistic story early on and wasn't at all satisfied when I was correct. I just wanted this book to be better.

Where were the courtroom scenes? How about one character I wanted to hear more about? I will look forward to Mr. Turow's next book because he is allowed one less than good book since all his other books are so great.

    "Silly"
    What disappointed you about Identical?

The story was unbelievable. The complexity was excessive. Way too many characters.
I gave up 1/2 way thru and that rarely happens.

Has Identical turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. However, Scott Turow is definitely off my list of authors. Some of his previous books were great. Not this time.
