Publisher's summary

How the Light Gets In is the ninth Chief Inspector Gamache Novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny.

"There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." —
Leonard Cohen

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by Myrna's reluctance to reveal her friend's name, Gamache soon discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous people not just in North America, but in the world, and now goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad, brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.

As events come to a head, Gamache is drawn ever deeper into the world of Three Pines. Increasingly, he is not only investigating the disappearance of Myrna's friend but also seeking a safe place for himself and his still-loyal colleagues. Is there peace to be found even in Three Pines, and at what cost to Gamache and the people he holds dear?

The best yet!

This was the best Penny book for me so far. I love the advancement of the background story as the current plot develops. Penny really built up tension in this one! Can’t wait to start another!

So so good and intense.

Another fabulous story of inspector Gomache. I was on the edge of my seat hoping not to have the series end with the death of Inspector Gomache. Only to discover the rest of the series has a new narrator as Ralph Cosham died in 2014. He was the voice of Gomache. I will listen to the rest of the series as I truly enjoy them, however I need a break to be able to embrace the new narrator in the future. This series has kept me going for awhile and now through the Stay at Home craziness. This one was intense and so full of hope and joy at the end.

Sensational Series

Absolutely was mesmerized by this series. A word to anyone just starting this book, if you have not read any of the other books of this series go back and read at least one of the first before you read the end. This is a fascinating series which I HAD to listen to each one and truly enjoyed every minute of listening time.
The Narrators were indescribable. They made me feel like every character is my next door neighbor. Am seriously enamored of the main character due to the wonderful Narrator.

Super wonderful listen

Maybe her best so far. Could not stop, great story and wonderful performance. Maybe a bit hard to imagine even Gamache pulling this off, but then what are heroes for! No clue to the ending. Well, maybe a few, but the depth of the plot was surprising even after reading the eight previous books. And still so many to come. Yeah!

Love each Louis Penny novel

This particular book brings the past loose threads to a head. Such an incredible book- how Louise Penny develops characters and drops hints in each book - all coming together in this story. Thank you Loiuse for these stories!
