Publisher's summary

Andy Carpenter isn't sure what to think when he gets a mysterious phone call from a good friend, policeman Pete Stanton, asking him to drop everything, drive to an unfamiliar address, and bring his girlfriend, Laurie Collins. He certainly isn't expecting to show up at a crime scene. But that's exactly where he arrives - at the house where Pete has just discovered the body of ex-convict Danny Balfour. Upstairs are Danny's now orphaned four-year-old son and basset hound. And that, Andy discovers, is why he and Laurie were called to the scene - Pete wants them to take care of the boy and the dog so they won't get thrown into the "system". This is already asking a lot, but soon Pete needs another big favor from Andy. Pete himself has come under suspicion for Danny's murder, and he needs defense attorney Andy to represent him - and to find out what really happened in Danny's house that day!

My favorite Andy Carpenter yet

Listened with my 40 yr old son on a road trip. Enough humor dad jokes to keep him chuckling and a good story, to boot.

Entertaining, well-constructed, nicely narrated

This was my first Andy Carpenter book. I bought "Hounded" with the dog photo on the cover thinking a dog might be essential to the mystery. This was not good detection on my part as that was not true. What you get instead is a very well-constructed contemporary crime mystery set in New Jersey. A few too many murders for my taste, but the first person narrative is entertainingly written by the author and very well-delivered by the narrator, Grover Gardner. There are so many characters you might think you need a scorecard but they're not hard to keep up with as the author reminds you periodically who they are and the essential characters and plot come thru clearly. You don't need to have read other novels in the series to follow along, but now that I've read this one I'd be interested in reading more and getting to know any regular characters better. Other than too many murders, a myriad of characters, and one or two illogical moves by attorney/investigator Andy Carpenter -- all of which are minor blips -- this is a very enjoyable story and listen.

Another great story and narration

The Andy Carpenter series always has plenty of amusement, great characters, and keeps you in suspense. I love that this particular story includes his interaction with a child which further enhances his character. I never tire of David Rosenfelt's wit and humor!

Superb as usual

Maybe even the best yet! Beautifully structured and with just the right amount of heart. Time flies by when an Andy Carpenter adventure is in progress!

Bought it for the dogs

I'm looking at my dogs, a golden retriever and a basset hound, knowing that because of them, I was suckered into buying this book. Really, look at that cover photo!
The story is typical for Rosenfelt and his Andy character. Andy is reluctantly dragged into solving a crime/representing a victim in court and trying to resolve his personal life which includes his soft spot for dogs and his lady friend.
I thought the story got a little boggy in the sorting out of the crime, but the ending of the book is worth the slowness in the middle.

Andy Carpenter does it again!

If you could sum up Hounded in three words, what would they be?

Funny, fast paced, great characters.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter is always a hoot. The plot moves along quickly and is cleverly punctuated with Andy's commentary on people and himself.

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

Andy of course. Although Marcus runs a close second.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

David Rosenfelt and Grover Gardner are a winning combination in the Andy Carpenter series. Light, clever, irreverent and well-plotted. I love this series for it's entertainment value.

Enjoyed this much awaited book in series

Love, love, love the Andy Carpenter Series. His humor just cracks me up and I can't get enough of it. I go through withdrawal waiting for the next book to be published. Recently lost my darling dog/member of the family so I didn't know if I could handle the dog references, but found it to be healing not disturbing. I love that he is such a dog lover and if you haven't read his book, Dogtripping, you should. It's a true account not one of his mystery or Andy Carpenter books. I have listened to every single book by David Rosenfelt and I need to add that I also love the narration by Grover Gardner. Keep em coming.

Fun little mystery

Fun little mystery. Mr. Rosenfelt does Curmudgeon right, giving him the perfect amount of self-effacing likability amid his grumbles. The fostering of Danny's son was a little hard to believe. But it made for a warm, if predictable, softening of the main character. The timing was good in the way the mystery unraveled. Rounding up from 3.5 stars.
