Publisher's Summary

The elegant, intelligent amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey is one of detective literature’s most popular creations. Ian Carmichael is the personification of Dorothy L. Sayers’ charming investigator in this BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation.

When Sandy Campbell's body is found at the foot of a cliff near the small town of Kircdubright, the local constabulary are convinced that the argumentative painter is a victim of a tragic accident. But when Lord Peter Wimsey turns up, the hunt begins for an ingenious killer. Faced with six men, all of whom have a motive for murder, the aristocratic amateur sleuth must deduce which are the five red herrings and which has blood on his hands.

    "Rather enjoyed the different accents!"

The "Five Red Herrings" are all suspects in the murder of an irascible character named Campbell. If you enjoy listening to a good Scottish brogue then this recording is for you. I loved every minute of it and I am afraid that I am now trying to roll my "r"'s far more often than the average Canadian speaker.:-)

"Ian Carmichael IS Lord Peter Wimsey"

Full cast dramatisation - with some hilarious Scottish accents! - with Ian Carmichael always suave, urbane and taking us gently through the mysteries of inter-wars Britain. A great story, well told and very, very enjoyable, even third time around. More please!?

"A fine early 20th Century ‘who dun it’"

This is an excellent dramatized radio play of a Lord Peter Whimsy ‘who dun it’ mystery. The cast all give fine performances and the atmosphere and occasional bars of music give a real feeling of the era. Ian Carmichael in particular epitomises a benign and only slightly snooty aristocrat. At first, I was a little incredulous that five people in a local rural area were all avid painters (artists), but then I realised that in a pre-television era this may have been quite likely, other than that it was easy to suspend disbelief and become immersed in the mystery. If you like the rather gentle and less brutal murder mysteries of yesteryear then this is a good choice.

    "Absolutely Wonderful Dorothy L.Sayers"

Yet another absolutely Wonderful Dorothy L. Sayers. I like these so much that I have them all in my audio collection & wish there were more.

This play is set in the Highlands of Scotland with a good selection of characters to take us through over 3 & a half hours of superb acting,
& storyline. Set in the 1920' to 30's, Five Red Herrings has so many twists & turns until we come to the real killer, that it will leave you
glued to your seat. These plays are so good, you will want to listen
to them over & over many times. Good clean english fun set in the
days when morals were high & violence was more or less left to the
imagination rather than in your face as most moderns are today. I
    prefer this style.

Ian Carmichael is perfect as the aristocratic gentleman sleuth. He was made to play the witty monocled Whimsy with the archaic english cut glass voice. I also have the full set Sayers DVD's & Carmichael is a treasure to watch time & time again. Both the audiobooks & the DVD
collections complement one another. These are good value for money
with a professional cast of excellent players. You cannot get higher
classier well made productions than these. A real treat.

    "I adore Carmichael's Wimsey"

There just aren't enough of them. The 'tailors' is one on my favourite listens ever and the fact that thats the only book available narrated by Ian Carmichael will leave me eternally devastated, the plays however go some way to making up for that. You just cant help but adore this character brought.to life by the amazing Ian Carmichael!

    Any additional comments?

I simply adore all of these adaptations and I will admit that it was listening to this and other stories in the series that made me buy the books. A solid adaptation with all the cast acting superbly. The only downside is the cutting of some of the music. Will listen over and over again. A regular on my iPod.
