An accountant who had become unwittingly mixed up in a criminal conspiracy, he was being threatened by a ruthless mobster: tell us where the money is or we'll kill your wife and eight-year-old daughter. If he'd been able to hand over the money, he would have done it in a heartbeat.

Publisher's Summary

One chilly morning a man throws himself off a Great Lakes ferry. An apparent suicide, the body is never found.

Five years later, we learn that the man had faked his own death. An accountant who had become unwittingly mixed up in a criminal conspiracy, he was being threatened by a ruthless mobster: tell us where the money is or we'll kill your wife and eight-year-old daughter.

If he'd been able to hand over the money, he would have done it in a heartbeat. But he couldn't, and so the only way to put his family beyond reach of harm seemed to be to make himself dead.

He has a different life now, and a different identity, and he never allows himself to think about his family. The fact that they are safe is all that matters.

Until one day he sees an article in USA Today about a 13-year-old girl who's won a national spelling bee. There's a picture. It's his daughter. And in the background there's his wife, holding hands with a man. Of course, he should have expected it.

What he didn't expect was that he recognized the man, and the last time he spoke to him he was threatening to kill his wife and daughter. He puts the paper down, and knows this changes everything. Now he's going to have to go back, and save his family one more time.

    "Error in the summary"

There is a mistake here. This book is a about a young girl who disappears and her fathers hunt for her. Quite a thriller. Very good characters. Father is a car salesman. The summary that appears on the Audible site seems to be for some other book! Audible can remove this review if they fix the problem!

"FYI - wrong Blurb! But still a great read."

I'd love to know from which book this blurb has been taken, because it sounded interesting. But still, this was yet another great Linwood Barclay read.

"A nightmare journey to find a missing daughter"

Early on in the book Tim Blake's teenage daughter Sydney goes missing and thereafter he's thrown into a nightmare of false leads as he tries to track her down not knowing whether she's alive or dead. The police even suspect that he's murdered her. The book veers from one crisis to another for Tim and the bodies pile up. Preposterous in many ways but gripping and enjoyable nevertheless. There's some humour to leaven the grimness in the foibles and interactions between Tim and his girlrfriend, and with his ex-wife and her new husband.

    "By Far the Worst"

I spent far longer on this book than I should have so I'm not going to spend long on a review. The blurb on this book seemed right up my street. However, in the end I just got bored into submission and my interest just waned. I didn't finish the book and quite frankly I had not the slightest interest by half way through as to what had happened to the narrator's daughter. I know I should have. I know that's not nice but frankly, life's too short and Buck Schirner's accent drove me mad. I came to the conclusion that the daughter probably did what I did, voted with her feet and took herself off to a more interesting place.

"A Exciting Book That I Did Not Want To End"
What did you like most about Fear the Worst?

This book had really interesting people. The family were divorced so not the usual 2.4 children. Sid went missing without a trace but you soon realise that people who say they have not seen her or know anything are trying to cover something up.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I can't pick a fave charaater I never can as they all were so different.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I liked the suspense when Sid's Dad was looking around the hotel Sid worked at as you were just waiting for him to get caught.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I did not want to pause it and couldn't wait to start to listen to it again

    Any additional comments?

It is quite scarey in parts and it keeps you guessing right up to the end.

"'Ordinary man' suddenly in extrordinary situation"

This was the first Linwood Barclay book I have listened to. My wife recommended the author and to start with I wasn't sure it had been a good choice. However the story quickly picked up and the narrators proved to be very good I found it easy to believe him as the main character ie an 'ordinary person' suddeny finding themselves in extrodinary situations. The author drops it a good dose of red herrings as well as pointers and without giving any of the plot away there are twists and turns right up until the end some of which I smuggly went 'aha saw that one' and some I never saw coming which for me is part of the fun in thrillers. I will listen to more by the author and narrator.

    "Brilliant"

Another great book from Linwood Barclay and I enjoyed the narration. It's difficult to stop listening to this one, once you get into it. I think this is one of Linwood's best books. The only slight criticism is in regards to the ending, I won't give anything away but there was definitely a few more chapters just to tie up and close off all the loose ends. I think part of the problem here, is that I just didn't want it to end. Very, very good.

    "Entertaining"

The first book I have read by this author and I wouldn't rule out downloading another.

Tim Blakes daughter vanishes without a trace, and the story follows his quest to find her. His relationship with his ex wife and her husband is tense to say the least, and he struggles to hold down his car salesman job whilst conducting his search. I found it hard, sometimes, to feel any sympathy for him, because I found him a bit whingey and self-pitying!

At times I found it a bit slow, but the final twist was satisfying. It was one of those books that was not hard to listen to and not disappointing because of the surprising end.

Better than mediocre, but not an absolute hit...

    "favorite book"

I have heard a number of books but I must admit that this is one of my favorite books, well written and a great end. I loved it and could not stop listening.
