Publisher's summary

Mitch Rapp and his protege, Mike Nash, may have met their match. The CIA has detected and intercepted two terrorist cells, but a third is feared to be on the loose. Led by a dangerous mastermind obsessed with becoming the leader of al-Qaeda, this determined and terrifying group is about to descend on America.

Rapp needs the best on this assignment, and Nash, who has served his government honorably for 16 years first as an officer in the Marine Corps and then as an operative in an elite counterterrorism team run by Rapp is his choice. Together, they have made careers out of meeting violence with extreme violence and have never wavered in the fight against the jihadists and their culture of death. Both have fought the war on terrorism in secret without accolades or acknowledgment of their personal sacrifices. Both have been forced to lie to virtually every single person they care about, and both have soldiered on with the knowledge that their hard work and lethal tactics have saved thousands of lives.

But the political winds have changed in America, and certain leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing to have men like Rapp and Nash put back on a short leash. And then one spring afternoon in Washington, DC, everything changes.

Using his insider knowledge of intelligence agencies and the military, Flynn once again delivers an all-too-real portrayal of a war that is that is waged every day by a handful of brave, devoted souls. Smart, fast-paced, and jaw-droppingly realistic, Extreme Measures is the political thriller of our time.

idiot Congressmen Running Amok. Rapp's Revenge

Loved this one! Vince Flynn exposes the idiot, selfish elected officials who run the government at the expense (more than just money) of the American people. Not sure who is the biggest danger to us-- the Congressmen and women or the Islamic terrorists. A fun and exciting read in more ways than one. Could not wait for each next chapter. Guidall proves again to be the perfect narrator for the Rapp novels.

it's like reading history that could have been

Every Rapp book I read gets me cussing the worthless politicians that are just like the current batch. They have become the enemy. I guess that what makes the books so great and within reason believable.

I think I may have listened to this in one sitting

Normally I’m used to Rapp saving the day before things go awry, so this was a sobering plot to go through. I shared so many of the emotions Flynn described for Rapp and Nash and the tension and anxiety as the climax came later in the novel. What a great book… I did hope the loose ends were sewed up in an epilogue, but hopefully the next book covers that.

Extreme measures

I have enjoyed reading these in order. So far George Guidall has narrated the best- each character has a different accent and pitch.

Great read

Good plot carried to end. Mitch Rapp is a great character who performs consistently but not too “Supermanish”.

A Challenge Met

I picked up Extreme Measures as part of an editors challenge - we decided to listen to books outside of our comfort zone, and for me a hard-core thriller was exactly that. I’ve only ever listened to one book that could be called a thriller - but it had literary and supernatural themes, so my fellow editors quickly dismissed it as “not counting”. I tried to get away with going the Stieg Larsson route, but no dice due to its wide-spread appeal. I needed to pick something ultra-macho and gun-toting, and Vince Flynn fit the bill. And while I’ve always considered myself to be a fairly lefty liberal, I was raised in the south in a family of hunters, so I was way more receptive to the tone of this book than I ever thought I would be. The fast-paced (and frankly, witty) dialogue pulled me right in. The political debate was actually way better than the action scenes. There’s nothing quite like hearing a bunch of burly Navy SEAL types, lunatic jihadists, and slimy politicians barking at each other about who’s the most heroic in the privacy of your own headphones. This was top–notch entertainment and definitely worth a return visit.

Enjoyed it !

I've been following this series (Mitch Rapp character) for about five years and have enjoyed watching this character evolve. Vince Flynn is a good writer and understands the limitations on what a spy character can and can't do (they are not superman and they never get the girl at the end). The plots that Flynn uses are realistic and could happen today. George Guidall is an excellent narrator, using a mixture of voices that be differentiated from each other (see his other readings). If you like these types of reading start with Flynn's first book before you get this one, you might appreciate it more.

Liberals...stay away

I love the Mitch Rapp character and the narrater George Guidall is great. This is my third listen in a row to Mitch Rapp stories and they are all excellent. The tough-guy, get it done no matter what and the heck with the politicians theme is refreashing. For those that enjoy this type of novel, also take a look at Daniel Silva novels with the Gabriel Allon character...they too are great.
