Audie Award Finalist, Science Fiction, 2014
In Extinction Machine, the fifth Joe Ledger book by Jonathan Maberry, the DMS must go up against someone - or something - in search of new technology that could bring about world war.
The president of the United States vanishes from the White House. A top-secret prototype stealth fighter is destroyed during a test flight. Witnesses on the ground say that it was shot down by a craft that immediately vanished at impossible speeds. All over the world, reports of UFOs are increasing at an alarming rate. And in a remote fossil dig in China dinosaur hunters have found something that is definitely not of this earth. There are rumors of alien-human hybrids living among us.
Joe Ledger and the Department of Military Sciences rush headlong into the heat of the world’s strangest and deadliest arms race, because the global race to recover and retro-engineer alien technologies has just hit a snag. Someone - or something - wants that technology back.

This was, for me, the best of the series. Brief moments of extreme exposition but I prefer that to the sappiness of a couple of the earlier Ledger books. Ray Porter's performance is one of the elements that makes this series... But the plot had me completely hooked as well. I definitely recommend this book.
Joe Kicks Ass!
Wow, without giving anything away, It has to be when a Major event happens to the DMS Warehouse in baltimore and Joe's reaction to it.
Ray Porter is awesome for this series. If this ever gets greenlight for the television series I can actually picture who I would like Joe to be (Jason O'Mara).
The way Ray voices Joe is just spot on. The tone, the attitude, everything. I love what he does with the other characters as well. You have to give serious props to Ray for bringing the writing to life. One of my favorite parts in this book from a narration perspective is when Top is speaking with Joe at Joe's uncles house right after they arrive.
Joe's mental dilemma in the cavern after he's been caught and gets free and has to make a decision on what to do with the people in the "lab" I'm using lab very loosely here in order not to give anything away.
Read all the other books in order. You don't have too but it will so enrich the story.
I have already listened to it 3 times in a row. Fabulous, complex novel. I catch new things each time I listen.
Joe and the cast of characters seem to come to life. Ray Porter does an awesome job of keeping the voices the same throughout the series. He pulls off the cocky Joe Ledger perfectly. I love when the good guys win.
*SPOILER ALERT* When Joe has the villian tied up on his desk with Ghost standing on the bad guy's chest. Also love Joe's quote: "There is rich, there's rich and then there's fu*k you."
There are moments of humor but by far the suspense of finding out if the team can stop the bad guys. I mean, I was pretty sure they would but lots of people died along the way. Some of the characters we have come to know and admire.
Please keep the series going, Mr. Maberry. I shall be giving you my money with glee.
Yes! Maberry does a decent enough job with the story, kept me interested but Ray Porter was phenomenal. He is a full cast!
I can't get enough of this series. Ray Porter has stolen my ears and Joe Ledger has stolen my heart!!!
Currently a local truck driver who has hours to listen to my audio books. I am hooked, some of my fellow drivers enjoy them also
I have read all of these and this is the best one yet, Mr Maberry has a story line that keeps you in the game,Mr Porter is one of the best readers for this set of characters you could wish for
All of the other Ledger books are good, this one is the best
I must admit that few readers can carry off such a range of characters as Mr Porter
He does a great job and hope he will continue his professional work
Actuall yes, I got into it but time won't allow one sitting
Hope the series will continue, Love the action and the storylines and the characters Please continue to write more
Turn ons??? 1) Obedience 2) Respect 3) Learning to please Master. Master does not do turn offs. He guides and trains His little stooges past what does not please Master.
didn't read it
the performance and the story (lots of action)
He brings to life Ledger's sarcastic humor...it's perfect
MIB are p*ssys next to the DMS
This was a very compelling listen. It's been a while since I've heard a book that captured my attention so completely. I've listened to the rest of the Joe Ledger books, and enjoyed them all, but this is the best in the series. It's an interesting mix of science and science fiction, fast-paced, with well-written dialogue and a fascinating plot. I was sorry when it was over, and it's going to be tough to find another book to follow it up with.
The story line and the narration is phenomenal!!!! There is no one better than Ray Porter for Joe Ledger!
I really can't say as Jonathan's characters are so exquisitely written...
He is an excellent narrator... He shouldn't be considered as "Read by" it should be "Performed by"
The whole book was excellent...
I love how Jonathan writes and the humanity he gives his characters (even if they are a little over the top) :) and the way he can evoke such gut wrenching emotion from a reader to actively despise a character is a credit to his skill... Thank you for Joe and all of the DMS... Much appreciated and a great ride!!!
The Marvel Guy
Maberry gives us a story we have been waiting for. Pure action from the get go. While i have enjoyed every book he has written so far, this book stands out. A great blend of action and story telling that works so well for his established characters. I hope the rest of the series will follow this pattern.
I was skeptical of the introduction of Ghost at first being the most cliche name a white dog could have. I have grown to love the rapport he has with Ledger making him the heart and soul of the team in a way.
His voice is and pacing suit the action story very well.
While i did did not laugh or cry i did find myself completely wrapped up in the action. Cheering echo team on as they always show up just in time.
This is a stand out in the series, maybe better than the first book Patient Zero, But it could not be this good with out it. The last couple of books were lacking but it all payed off in The Extincion Machine
