Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diane Mott Davidson has taken readers by storm with clever mysteries filled with tantalizing plots and mouthwatering recipes. In her 12th novel, her tastiest tale yet, the ingenious storyteller whips up a rich souffle of murder and mischief.

The governor of Colorado has commuted the prison sentence of Goldy Schulz's ultra-handsome, ultra-charming, ultra-venal ex-husband, Dr. John Richard Korman, otherwise known to Goldy as the Jerk. He's released, and soon afterward Goldy becomes the victim of threats, rumors, and violence.

Then there's a murder and suspicion centers on Goldy. Suddenly, she is faced with the challenge of running her successful catering business while fending off two persistent detectives.

Caught in a web of secrets and lies that can tear her family apart, Goldy must use all of her considerable powers of detection to find the real killer before she herself becomes a target.

Good content - fair narrator

My wife and I have enjoyed Diane Mott Davidsons books for quite a while now. This one is as good as her previous works as far as content and pace. However, if you download the book in format 3 or 4 and are listening without background noise, be prepared to be annoyed by the narrator. It seemed like at the end of every other sentence you could hear her swallow the spit that had acculmulated in her mouth. It was like listening to someone chew for hours. I tried not to think about it but, I kept coming back to it. But, I'm neurotic like that.
That being said, the book was enjoyable yet unpredicable and I would recommend it.

The First Goldy Mystery could Not finish...

I found myself really, really bored by Double Shot. I found myself not caring one whit for the irritating Marla, whiney Arch, or Goldy's strange featherbrained-ness (who in their right mind would fire a firearm at a bunch of mice). Feh.... What a waste. And I LIKE these books. Also the excessvie focus on 'the jerk' and his death was maudlin. Not her usual fare at all.

Narrator ruined this one...

I really WANT to give a higher rating to this book, but I cannot in good faith. I LOVE this series of books, but will read the rest IN PRINT, because the narrator almost ruined the series for me forever. She sounded so much older than I pictured Goldy to be and had an awful voice, that of a heavy, hacking smoker. (I had always pictured Goldy to be a bubbly, vivacious, Bette Midler type of gal, but not with this reader! And, yes, the slurping, sucking sounds made throughout the reading sidetracked me and annoyed me to where I almost stopped listening. Terrible narrator. Fix that and I may listen to future ones...

As for the tale, I normally find them action packed...this one was a bit "slow" in action...

Wished I read other reviews

I'm really sorry I did check out the reviews on this book before buying. I used to LOVE this series, but it has become somewhat repetitive. The reader was VERY distracting. The sucking, slurping, swallowing sounds were very irritating and I will never listen to anything read by her again. She has a very good voice, but seems to have a salivary impediment!

Great story...irritating narration

I love this series, but this narrator seems to be either swallowing or licking her lips or something between every sentence (and sometimes in the middle of sentences too). It was extremely irritating, to the point that I nearly gave up. I didn't notice this with the other books that she narrated. If I were you, I would try the abridged version - different narrator.

This is not the voice of Goldy

I have listened to over 100 audible books and this is the first that I have not only stopped listening to but asked for my money back! I am a big fan of Diane Mott Davidson's books! Who ever picked the narrator never read one. The narrator's voice is raspy and she keeps gasping for breath...pass this one by!!!

Please change narrator

When I found the next book in the series had the same narrator, I berated myself for not having written a review on this one and so came to see what others had said. I found that most agreed with my impression -- her voice doesn't fit my picture of Goldy, and was not pleasant to listen to for all the reasons others have listed. So why did they keep the same narrator???? I think I'll have to put on my glasses and actually "read" Dark Tort, though I don't know when I'll find the time! (P-L-E-A-S-E get a better narrator who sounds more like Goldy should!)

HUGE Disappointment

What would have made Double Shot better?

CLEAN LANGUAGE! I only listened to about 30 minutes and turned it off. I did not finish the book.

Would you recommend Double Shot to your friends? Why or why not?

Absolutely not. I could not recommend a book that does not meet my own personal standards.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator was horrible ... she sounded like she was in the process of chain smoking. But I would have finished the book, in spite of the narrator, had it not been for the bad language.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I have no idea ... I did not finish it. I love to cook, so I feel like I would have loved the story. That's the only reason I gave the book 3 stars.

Any additional comments?

I have not listened to or read anything by Diane Mott Davidson. When I did some research on her, I saw that she is licensed to preach and has led Bible studies. Too bad her "religion" is left on the shelf when she writes. I presumed she would be a safe author to listen to because of her religious background. Boy was I wrong! I am very disappointed because I believe I would have really enjoyed this book.

Double Shot

The reader Barbara Rosenblat is very iritating to listen to as her exagerated style of reading makes you want to shut off the recording and listen to something else. It is unfortunate as many of the authors books she reads are definitely off my list of listens as I can't stand to listen to her reading of them.
