Publisher's summary

“Few writers do it better than Child.” (Booklist)

Former naval doctor Peter Crane is urgently summoned to a remote oil platform in the North Atlantic to help diagnose a bizarre medical condition spreading through the rig. But when he arrives, Crane learns that the real trouble lies far below—on Deep Storm, a stunningly advanced science research facility built two miles beneath the surface on the ocean floor. The top-secret structure has been designed for one purpose: to excavate a recently discovered undersea site that may hold the answers to a mystery steeped in centuries of myth and speculation.

Sworn to secrecy, Dr. Crane descends to Deep Storm.

A year earlier, he is told, routine drilling uncovered the remains of mankind’s most sophisticated ancient civilization: the legendary Atlantis. But now that the site is being excavated, a series of disturbing illnesses has begun to affect the operation. As Crane is indoctrinated into the strange world of Deep Storm and commences his investigation, he begins to suspect that the covert facility conceals something more complicated than a medical mystery. The discovery of Atlantis might, in fact, be a cover for something far more sinister...and deadly.

Critic reviews

"Child delivers a well-crafted and literate science-fiction thriller." (Publishers Weekly)

"The story is imaginative and filled with wonder. Lovers of deep-sea adventure (and in particular fans of the James Cameron movie The Abyss or Michael Crichton's novel Sphere) will want to plunge into this one. (Booklist)

“Lincoln Child has a well-earned reputation for writing solid thrillers.” (Tampa Tribune)

Good story

I find this book was rather decent for this type of book. I would read again.

Interesting Enough...

The story itself has enough suspense and mystery to keep you engaged. I will say that alot of the details were too...detailed for my liking. I am not a scientist, a doctor or an expert on nuclear weapons and radiation. So, it was rather difficult to remain engaged when scientific details got too technical. And if you arent interested in that type of stuff, the book can seem to drag on and on. But the story is good enough to keep you listening because you want to know what the crew of Deep Storm is up against. I should have gone with the abridged version of this book since the unabridged version is 5 hours longer. The narrator did a phenomenal job! He gave each character so much personality and life.

SPOILER ALERT!!! I will say that I was a bit disappointed to learn that they never really deal with an alien entity. There are remnants of alien life mentioned but they never come in contact with an alien or monster. I really hoped this would be a creature/monster/alien story. It turns out, that they only come in contact with alien technology.

Reads like an action movie

Solid narration from Scott Brick--I found this an exciting journey! Intelligent and thought-provoking without sounding overly pretentious. Expect a mystery, peril and pressure.

After finishing Steve Alten's "Meg" series I wanted more deep sea adventures--and "Deep Storm" delivered!

The Abyss Gazes Also...

This was a very interesting story along the lines of The Abyss (film) and even more so like Sphere (novel). I absolutely LOVED the story and the way it gradually became clear what our deep sea dwelling characters were dealing with. Out of all the Lincoln Child solo fiction novels I have read (including Utopia and Terminal Freeze), this one was the most satisfying. If you like sci-fi technothrillers, dive in!
And what can I say about Scott Brick? I have listened to so many of his performances by now, he is a trusted friend in the audiobook world.

Had Me on the Edge of my Seat

If you could sum up Deep Storm in three words, what would they be?

Fast Paced Action

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely kept me on the edge of my seat - literally. I was on a long drive from IL to Cleveland - not an edge of the seat kind of trip and as the book got to the climax I was gripping the wheel and leaning forward I was so engrossed - it was just that kind of a story (I had to remind myself that leaning forward and gripping the wheel probably wasn't optimal driving strategy) I never saw the ending coming. The combination of hard science, science fiction, political thriller, and suspense were really well balanced and very believable.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

I'm not usually a Scott Brick fan, but this time his reading was well paced, characters were well done, and he kept just the right tone to keep the story interesting.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I was stuck in the car for 9 hours and I was perfectly happy to listen to this the entire drive. I was disappointed when I had to stop for gas.
