Publisher's summary

When a NASA satellite discovers an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory, a victory with profound implications for NASA policy and the impending presidential election. To verify the authenticity of the find, the White House calls upon the skills of intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic scholar Michael Tolland, Rachel travels to the Arctic and uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery, a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy. But before she can warn the President, Rachel and Michael are ambushed by a deadly team of assassins. Fleeing for their lives across a desolate and lethal landscape, their only hope for survival is to discover who is behind this masterful plot. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.

Critic reviews

"Brown moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller: a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm." (Publishers Weekly)
"A dazzling high-tech adventure...Brown proves once again that he is among the most intelligent and dynamic of authors in the thriller genre." (Library Journal)
"This is pretty exciting stuff...and Brown certainly does have a knack for spinning a suspenseful yarn." (Booklist)

Loads of excitement , mediocre story.

I am a huge Dan Brown fan, but this book was not his finest work. There was lots of excitement and suspense but the twist revealed itself too easily. The narrator was not as good as in his other books. I will however remain an avid reader of Mr. Brown.

Deception Point

As always, Dan Brown has written another winner. It keeps you interested in going on to see what is next. Enjoyed this very much as with all of Dan Browns' books.

Enjoyable MOUTH NOISES

I like Dan Brown's writing style. I pre-ordered his new book coming out this May and thought I would listen to some of his work I haven't heard. A lot of people thought the audio version was not bearable due to the unprofessional recording which includes a lot of mouth noises... they are there alright, but I didn't listen with ear-buds, so they weren't that noticeable all the time. I would still recommend the audio version if you listen through speakers. You can listen comfortably at 1.25 speed also. Although this wasn't related to Robert Langford, it was enjoyable. The same style you enjoy in his other books are present here...strong and smart protagonist, good background research that you can look up online, characters you care about, lots of good suspense, and good ending. If you like DB's other novels, get this one... you'll enjoy it and be through with it before you realize it. later.

Deception Point

Any additional comments?

Narrated by Richard Poe, Deception Point is approximately seventeen hours of listening. Although not specifically stated, the catalyst for this book is likely the discovery of a meteorite in Antartica that was thought to contain evidence of life on Mars. The event involved an announcement by then President Bill Clinton, NASA dignitaries at his side, given approximately two or three years prior to publication of this book. Deception Point is too similar, and it would be too much of a coincidence for that announcement not to have been the seed planted in Dan Brown’s brain which grew into this story.

Deception Point begins with the exact scenario, except this meteorite is huge, buried in ice, evidence of creepy-crawlers from outer space within. A presidential election is forthcoming, the incumbent’s rival an anti-NASA expense advocate. Politics, skullduggery, scheming, sex scandals, murder, all manner of fun abounds with a delightful mix of fact and fiction, typical of Dan Brown. Is the meteorite real? Do we finally have proof that ‘we are not alone.’? Or … is this whole thing a scam to keep NASA alive and funded? Read on and enjoy!

My opinion

I loved this book! And after I read some of the reviews about the narrator, Richard Poe, I was concerned that his sometimes "breathless" voice might distract me from the characters, but it was just the opposite. He was great, and he spoke just like many people that I talk to every day. The book was action packed, and the only thing that kept me sane, was that I had read other books by Dan Brown, and I knew that he would not let the hero/heroine die...Just when one problem seemed to be solved, another popped up. Great read/listen. I didn't care if the politics were accurate or not, or if the scientific data was accurate...it is fiction, after all. I recommend it 100%.

Audio?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, great story and very suspenseful.

Would you be willing to try another one of Richard Poe’s performances?

Yes

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, disgust... but not from the story. The narration is horrible.

Any additional comments?

The audio is terrible. I can't believe the studio would let such unprofessional work be released. Richard Poe is great, but you can literally hear the saliva in his mouth ever time he opens it or swallows. It is really quite disgusting. Turn down the gain on the microphone!

Moderately entertaining. Not Dan's Best

I tend to enjoy novels with a little science thrown into the conspiracy. This novel reminded me of Michael Crichton.

The narrator was fine. Editing out his sounds of swallowing would have been welcomed though.
