Publisher's summary

When a NASA satellite discovers an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory, a victory with profound implications for NASA policy and the impending presidential election. To verify the authenticity of the find, the White House calls upon the skills of intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic scholar Michael Tolland, Rachel travels to the Arctic and uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery, a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy. But before she can warn the President, Rachel and Michael are ambushed by a deadly team of assassins. Fleeing for their lives across a desolate and lethal landscape, their only hope for survival is to discover who is behind this masterful plot. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.

Critic reviews

"Brown moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller: a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm." (Publishers Weekly)
"A dazzling high-tech adventure...Brown proves once again that he is among the most intelligent and dynamic of authors in the thriller genre." (Library Journal)
"This is pretty exciting stuff...and Brown certainly does have a knack for spinning a suspenseful yarn." (Booklist)

Enjoyed the mystery.

The mystery and thrill drew me in to binge listen. I had to know the who, what, why, and how and enjoyed the story. I didn’t like the reader’s microphone as it allowed hearing him swallow and mouth noises. Great book, better microphone next time.

Ear Candy

Listening in 2024 dates the story to a simpler time. Fax machines. Sex scandals that actually and political careers! Nevertheless, this was a really fun. Listen with multiple plot twist.

I love Dan Brown's Novel but geez that perfomance

This book was so hard to listen to. The narrator was wonderful when he wasn't smacking his lips, drinking something, or taking extremely long pauses. I had never had such a hard time listening to a book. I had to finish it because this was the only Dan Brown book I hadn't read, but geez it was hard to finish. I would be sitting there listening then he would stop talking and I thought ok something has happened my phone must have died but then I would hear a loud throat swallow and then he would start up again.

Excellent

I have read all of Dan Brown's books. This one ranks right at the top. I could not wait to get in my car to see what was going to happen next. I liked this one better than DaVinci or Angels and Demons.

My first Dan Brown

I really enjoyed this book. There were times when I was finding excuses to go on extended drives in the car so that I could finish a chapter.

Is Richard Poe eating hard candy the whole time?

Any additional comments?

The book was decent and Richard Poe really paints a picture. Unfortunately it's painted with saliva. I think I would have liked the book more if the "mouth sounds" were not so prevalent. I assume they have used some new technology that turns Bubble Yum into a microphone capable of capturing every nearly imperceptible sound the human mandible makes.

I don't think this is Richard Poe's fault however or Dan Brown's. They did a great job and aside from the live action experience of being a piece of taffy working it's way though the first part of digestion. This was a great book.

I only hope the old gypsy man that cursed the recording with the word "Wetter" when it ran over his daughter has found solace in the fact that we all suffered the sopping sounds of Deception Point. I'm eager to listen to other recordings from inside a dogs mouth.

narrator needs more water breaks

I thought this was a good story. I loved the plot and the characters were well developed. My issue was with the narrator. I could hear him swallowing or that his throat was dry throughout the story. It was somewhat distracting.
