Publisher's summary

When a NASA satellite discovers an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory, a victory with profound implications for NASA policy and the impending presidential election. To verify the authenticity of the find, the White House calls upon the skills of intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic scholar Michael Tolland, Rachel travels to the Arctic and uncovers the unthinkable: evidence of scientific trickery, a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy. But before she can warn the President, Rachel and Michael are ambushed by a deadly team of assassins. Fleeing for their lives across a desolate and lethal landscape, their only hope for survival is to discover who is behind this masterful plot. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all.

Critic reviews

"Brown moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller: a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm." (Publishers Weekly)
"A dazzling high-tech adventure...Brown proves once again that he is among the most intelligent and dynamic of authors in the thriller genre." (Library Journal)
"This is pretty exciting stuff...and Brown certainly does have a knack for spinning a suspenseful yarn." (Booklist)

Darn good listening

It thought this was a great story and had plenty of suspense. One of those books I drove around the block to hear more of. Would recommend.

Richard Poe is horrible

As usual, Dan Brown was at his best. I really enjoyed listening to this. BUT, I will NEVER listen to another book that is narrated by Richard Poe. It sounded like he was chewing gum, or eating all the time. Ugh! And he may have a bad case of COPD. I enjoyed listening to what Dan Brown wrote. But it was hard to continue to listen to Richard Poe. So far, no one has done worse. I hope that I never listen to any one else that is as bad as him.

Interesting premise

Typical of Brown’s books, the action is fast and furious, but a bit surreal. The result is that way too much action and too many red herrings get compressed into a block of time roughly equivalent to the time it takes to listen to the reading. For me, this is not a formula that leads to high.

Puts the fiction in science fiction

Who knew that presidencies were made and lost based on the issue of our apparently subversive space exploration agency!

If you like meteorites, extreme environments, espionage, scientific mysteries, wildly inventive schemes and plotting, and yes, even a little romance, then this book is for you. Brown makes some pretty loose assumptions somewhat based on science, but I still enjoyed the story.

Horrible Purification!

The story is great, the narration is great, but one thing made me cringe throughout the entire book and made me want to stop the entire time. Whoever produced this recording needs to review the audio, because you can hear the narrator smacking the entire time!

Great story, bad production!

Great Book, Great Narrator, Poor Recording

What did you like best about Deception Point: A Novel? What did you like least?

I don't get bothered by much. Some things I can ignore eventually over time if I get used to it. But you can never get used to the sound of saliva swishing around in a person's mouth when they're up close to a microphone, even after 2 hours of listening to it. Clearly, the microphone they used was of the highest caliber, as they were also able to pick up the sounds of his rumbling stomach during some parts of the book. Please feed Richard Poe and release him from the damp and dark basement they've locked him in.

Great narration though. He really made the story and characters come alive! I assume in desperation to be fed.

Absurd, but fun.

First off, Richard Poe needs to learn the difference between NASA and Nassau!
Hell, he’s not even consistent about it!
Second, the producer and/or editor need to understand that the listener does NOT want to hear Mr. Poe slobbering, swallowing, and smacking his lips.
That being said, the story’s a lot of fun even when told in predictable Dan Brown style.
Mr. Brown’s penchant for childishly ridiculous obfuscation is ever present but at least it doesn’t conflict with the audiobook medium as it does in “Angels & Demons”.
