Critic reviews

"Johnson combines a vivid sense of the dailiness of life--and the way human relationships take root in that dailiness--with a sure--handed touch for jolting both his characters and his readers out of their comfort zones and deep into harm's way. It's hard to ask for more in a literary mystery." ( Booklist)

Completely Hooked!!!

Craig Johnson and George Guidall deliver a first class story and performance. In this second book, only a couple of weeks have passed since the end of book one and this allows the listener to become immersed in the characters. I am fortunate that this is a new series for me and I can listen to them back-to-back-to-back. (I am listening to book three and have added all released books to my library). I can say, without giving away the storyline, is that each book adds additional layers to Walt and friends. I can't wait to see where Craig takes us.

I bought the first book in preparation for a trip out west. I will now I be looking for Walt, Vic, and Henry as we drive through Wyoming.

As for George, I can't imagine another voice for Walt. As a matter of fact, I discovered that these books have been made into a TV series. While I enjoy the watching the show, I keep waiting for the actors to sound just like they do when I listen....so far, that hasn't happened.

I Love all Craig Johnson books

Craig Johnson writes good stories, good characters and good dialog. I have enjoyed every one of his books and look forward to the next one. George Guidall does his usual great job of narrating and acting the book and characters perfectly.

Entertaining, but . . .

Any additional comments?

The Walt Longmire books are entertaining, and George Guidall is an excellent narrator. So if you are looking for some entertainment, this is a great series.

Don't expect great literature though. Longmire is the sheriff in an allegedly sparsely populated area in Wyoming. Already, the murders are piling up. It doesn't make sense that this sleepy area where everyone knows everyone else has a regular dose of murder. There is no epiphany, no moral, no theme. These are stories. That's all. They'll entertain you, and then they are gone.

Having said that, not everything must reach the upper echelon of literary work to be worthwhile. I enjoy these books. Just don't expect Jane Austen or Joseph Conrad. Buckle your seat belt, and enjoy a story.

First rate mysteries.

These books have a feel similar to the Tony Hillerman Navaho mysteries. The characters are likable and realistic, mostly. I also enjoy learning about a unique area and way of life while puzzling out who really did it.

My first Craig Johnson / Walt Longmire

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

With the reading of George Guidall I felt like I was there with Walt in Wyoming in a laid back sherif's job with a good Indian friend trying to pull the sherif out of his funk after loosing his wife. Investigating a murder with tenacity and experience Walt's way of doing things is a refreshing change from the high intensity thrillers I am used to. I'll be reading many more of Craig Johnson's, Walt Longmire series.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I guess so, it definitely kept me interested with the character development and scene descriptions that until the murder investigation got more involved I felt like I was right there with them.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

Walt Longmire was portrayed perfectly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yea, when his Indian friend insisted on getting a contractor to clean up and build up Walt's house.

Any additional comments?

I liked Johnson's way of including the Indians into his book, it made them real in my Midwestern mind.
