Critic reviews

"Johnson combines a vivid sense of the dailiness of life--and the way human relationships take root in that dailiness--with a sure--handed touch for jolting both his characters and his readers out of their comfort zones and deep into harm's way. It's hard to ask for more in a literary mystery." ( Booklist)

Performance, place and character

This is only my second Walt Longmire mystery but I am totally hooked. The thing I'm liking most about the books is the way the author makes you "feel" the place and how the characters in the story relate to each other and their surroundings. I love how the main characters, Walt Longmire and his best friend Henry Standing Bear, are both so very well educated and so down to earth. i also like the fact that the author brings in humor in small but significant ways throughout the narrative. The humor I noticed most this time took the form of Walt Longmire's self-deprecation and also in his description of Dog's (Walt's other best friend) behaviors. The writing is sophisticated and poetic but very approachable and a joy to listen to. The story line was great and George Guidall is the best ever narrator for this genre.

Craig Johnson Brings the West Alive

Death without Company is a book about the west and the folks who live and love it. The strength of the characters, their loyalty to each other, and personal common sense are true to Wyoming as I've know it. This is terrific audio book, and I look forward to many more of Craig Johnson's fine work.

Book 2 and I feel like I've known Walt all my life

Sherrif Longmire is so laid-back...good at his job but not obsessed with it. His friendship with Henry is endearing because they've been friends so long and are not mushy about it, but you know they would do anything for each other. There is a bit of romance in this one, mixed in with a very good mystery.

The narration is perfect for this book. Guidall's voice sounds older and rural and there was no doubt which character was talking.

I can't wait to "read" the rest of the series. This one's a keeper.

Love the Longmire series--

I discovered this series because I loved the show Longmire which was on TV last year. This is the second book in the Walt Longmire series, and I liked this one better than the first (which I really liked!). The characters are well written and interesting. The plot always has just enough mystery to carry the story, and just enough of the characters personally to want to jump right into the next book in the series. The narrator is perfect for the Longmire character, and perfect to keep me entertained--

I can't say enough good things about this book--looking forward to listening to many more!!

Another Great Longmire Tale!

This is the second in the series and it did not disappoint! Great characters and plot, wonderful narration! I'm hooked on Sheriff Walt Longmire. . . there's something so endearing about his gravelly voice and self deprecating ways. Bear, Vic, Ruby. . . love the way the author has created such depth for the whole family of Longmire cronies!

Can't wait to hear the next one. I'll be sad when I've read them all. I don't know how the performance could be better

Good story - GREAT characters.

Great unpredictable but solid story. A surprising amount of action given the setting of a slow moving laid back community. What makes this a new series favorite for me is the deep and interesting characters. Simply loved this book.

George Guidall - stellar narration. He IS Walt Longmire.

Long tall tale

Excellent story! Puts several pieces together in the overall series. Really draws you into the whole Wyoming town, history and present.
