Critic reviews

"Johnson combines a vivid sense of the dailiness of life--and the way human relationships take root in that dailiness--with a sure--handed touch for jolting both his characters and his readers out of their comfort zones and deep into harm's way. It's hard to ask for more in a literary mystery." ( Booklist)

Surprisingly good book

As I'd never before read anything by this author, I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy the book. Good story, good narrator - I hope there are more to come.

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover... it's so Much Better

I avoided this series for the longest time based on the cover alone. I do not care for the art work and am guilty of judging the books by the covers.

I'm glad I finally broke down and gave it a try. Totally worth a credit if you like murder mysteries and enjoy or appreciate small town life. The series is set next to a Native American reservation. The sheriffs best friend is a Native American war hero. There some mystic throughout the story.

The author has written great characters that I felt almost came to life as I listened to the narration. George Guidall is a very good storyteller. After the first book, I could not wait to listen to the second in the series just so I could have more of the characters I came to love.

Unexpectedly excellent

I was skeptical about a series that spawned a popular TV show, as I gave up on TV a long time ago; but I was very happily surprised at how much I'm loving the Longmire series. Very well written with the end always a surprise; but most importantly, all of the parts of the story where many authors would lazily take short cuts that lead to simple-minded and gratuitously gruesome storylines, Johnson masterfully and artfully writes the drama and tragedy in his tales as impprtant enhancements to the story without the unnecessary shock value that detracts from good storytelling. And, as always, George Guidall is perfection.

Excellent story and story teller.

I like the Netflix series but George Guidell and the detail in this book create a whole different animal! So incredibly good - listen carefully every step of the way!

Great characters, mystery and humor

The dry humor of the characters made me laugh out loud throughout this book. Great characters and an interesting story!

Another great one!

If you could sum up Death Without Company in three words, what would they be?

I love these stories. The recurring characters are delightful - I always want to catch up and see what they are up to now. I love Walt's sense of humor!!

Favorite?

It's hard to pick a favorite among the Longmire series. They are all pretty unique in setting, tone and devices. But this is a really good one. Buy, Listen, Enjoy.

Western Crimes

This story was not what I thought it would be, it was very good. At first it took me a little bit to get into it, but once they ruled the little old lady's death as a homicide and started looking into her past and her family the story started getting good with all the different twist and secrets that were coming to light. This story deals with drugs, love, secrets, and friendship. I enjoyed the Indian names, unfortunately I can't remember who was who but I was still able to follow the story. I haven't read any of the books in the series but if you like westerns and crime mysteries this is a series for you.
