The caller leaves word she's hidden something in the antebellum house Max and his wife, Annie, are restoring. When Annie finds out, she hurries to the woman's home, only to discover her shot. Annie hears her final whisper as she holds the dying woman's hand.
Evidence links the dead woman to a nearby home, where a fortune in gold coins has gone missing. The gold coins, rare Double Eagles, were stolen from a house filled with visiting family members - twentysomethings hungry for money and several with secrets they must keep.
Is one of them willing to kill for a fortune in coins? Or is it the dead woman's high-school dropout son? Max is there when the police arrest the son, but the boy's shock upon learning of his mother's death convinces Max of his innocence.
Max and Annie plunge wholeheartedly into the investigation. But are the coins hidden in Annie and Max's Franklin house? The intruder who shoots at Max seems to think so. And guess who walks in when Annie discovers the secret of that house....

I love all of the Death in Demand stories. The characters are believable and interesting. They help me escape my world for a little while and enter another. Mysteries are my favorite, especially the ones I can't figure out before the end of the book. With this series, sometimes I am surprised at who done it!
The narrator was good for this story. She did voices for differtent characters. It was a good listen.
The voices of many of the characters in this audible version are so poorly done that I found it hard to get past them and lose myself in the story. The absolutely worst is Max Darling. I know it's difficult for a female narrator to do male voices, but she made Max sound old, supercilious, and completely out of character. He's supposed to be a cool, young guy and he sounded anything but. The story itself was entertaining although I felt certain of the murderer's identity early on and I prefer a plot that keeps me guessing until the end.
