Publisher's summary

Sports agent Myron Bolitar is poised on the edge of the big time. So is Christian Steele, a rookie quarterback and Myron's prized client. But when Christian gets a phone call from a former girlfriend, a woman who everyone, including the police, believes is dead, the deal starts to go sour. Trying to unravel the truth about a family's tragedy, a woman's secret, and a man's lies, Myron is up against the dark side of his business - where image and talent make you rich, but the truth can get you killed.

In novels that crackle with wit and suspense, Edgar Award winner Harlan Coben has created one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction - Myron Bolitar - a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent who grows more and more engaging and unpredictable with each pause-resisting appearance.

Older book by Harlan Coben

I’ve read more recent books by Harlan Coben. It was interesting to see how his writing has matured. While not his best this book had it’s moments.

Pure Joy😊

The Myron Bolitar novels are pure joy, their dry wit and charm delivered brilliantly by Jonathon Marosz. These novels leave fresh little smiley faces stamped upon my soul, even on my most grumpy of days. If that is not worth a credit, what is???

Brilliant story that needs several prequels

I’ve read or listen to this book several times and it always makes me wish Harlan would write prequels to this story. The Duke years to include an expanded story of they day Win and Marlon met. How Win let Marlon into his world. Not something that would have been expected. How did Win get Marlon into martial arts? Did something happen. Once Marlon was out of basketball how did he and Win end up with the FBI. Why did they quit? Again, did something happen? Is that where they met Esperanza? If this is the first time your reading the Bolitar books enjoy the ride. They are all brilliantly written and narrated.

Good but not Great

Having read and throughly enjoyed several other Coben books (and TV adaptations), including a few in the Bolitar series, I decided to go back to the 1st Bolitar story.

Although well plotted, I found it less humorous and more crass than Coben's more recent work. This was due in part to the less-enlightened time in which it was written (mid'90s) and the sleazy subject matter. However, one of biggest hurdles was the narrator who lacked the vocal range and overall engagement of the amazing Steven Weber, the voice of the other selections I've enjoyed.

It was nice to learn more about the personalities who populate Bolitar's world thru book 1 of the series, and the payoff as the mystery unraveled was satisfying. However, it made me appreciate even more the value of an gifted voice actor.

As a completist, I don't regret sticking thru to the end of book 1, but I'm looking forward to enjoying Mr. Weber's dulcet tones in future listens.

Not just for men

I just started listening to Harlan Coben books, and at first I was a little worried that these would be just for men, however I was pleasantly surprised - I love the characters and the stories always seem to have twists and turn.

Unbelievably Great!

I began this book because my wife raved about this series, and she never raves about anything--including about me. The story line is completely ridiculous except it draws you in immediately and entertains with every word written. This book will put the reader/listener in a great mood. Also, it is a terrific murder mystery, that has wonderful plot twists.

Wish I found this Author earlier

Interesting plot. Well performed. Great characters. Many of the one liners from the main character has me laughing out loud at the gym. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
