Different

I was listening to the Harper Connelly series by Harris and REALLY liked it, but there are only a few oils in that one. I decided to try this. it's really different, and, while I like it, I found the heroine to be more whiny. It's still quite good, though, and I loved the mystery part of the book. I also like that the heroine has a moral compass of sorts.

Great story and narration

I was pleasantly surprised by this story line. It was engaging, well thought out, and the narration was great.
I appreciated the character development and underlying structure that allowed the story to flow seamlessly. I’m from the south and the accent was well done. I will follow this author and narrator for more of their work.

This was a great introduction to a new series!

Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. The Sookie Stackhouse series is also the inspiration for the HBO show, True Blood. Dead Until Dark was a good introduction and first book in the series, I really enjoyed the journey.

Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress in a small town in Louisiana and she's always wanted to meet a vampire because in this world vampires have been exposed and humans and vampires have been trying to co habituate together. Sookie meets her first vampire in Bill, a (confederate) civil war era vampire. Bill is quite taken with Sookie and she is equally taken with him.

The spicy scenes were okay, I'm giving this 3 chilies out out 5 chilies 🌶️🌶️🌶️ worth of spice.

There's a murder mystery mingled in with some paranormal romance and I really enjoyed this book. It was gory, sexy, mysterious, and entertaining. I'm giving this 4 stars out of 5 because I had a lot of fun with this read.

Great narrator

I’ve watched the show countless times and really enjoy it. I actually prefer book Sookie over show Sookie (at least season 1 haha). Really enjoyed the book and starting number 2 now.

A fun listen

I’ve read this series before, and when it popped up on audible I thought “why not!” It’s just such a fun book, and the narrator makes it even better! I love this series - especially in the beginning.

Nice, Easy Listen

STORY - Dead Until Dark is a fairly light romantic vampire whodunnit. It starts slowly but pleasantly, then has an exciting ending. It is the perfect type of book to listen to when you don't want to concentrate too hard or have your guts wrenched. Sookie's mind-reading capability provides a unique, interesting twist to this book, and I look forward to that portion of her future escapades!

On the negative side, I think the character development of Sookie's romantic interest, Bill, was somewhat lacking. I just didn't ever care for him and therefore didn't enjoy the romantic portions of the book (which was a large part). Maybe I was just missing something...

NARRATOR - At first I didn't like the narrator's attempt at a Southern accent, but it started to grow on me. It falls short of sounding authentic, but it's a nice change from the accents in most audio books. Otherwise, she did a good job, and I came to enjoy the slower Southern pace.

OVERALL - I enjoyed this book as a relaxing break between more intense books, and I plan to move on to Book 2.
