Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - For audiobook fans, Johanna Parker was the beloved voice of Sookie Stackhouse long before Anna Paquin and True Blood came around. Johanna has a way of bringing the denizens of Bon Temps, Louisiana, to vivid life (or, in some cases, after-life). There’s no greater compliment about her performance than this: even listeners who have discovered the audiobooks after watching the TV show rave that she nails these books. —Steve

    "Fun and addictive"

I was pleasantly suprised to listen to this. I really enjoyed it. It was funny and it moved fast. I read a review of someone who didn't like it because they didn't like Bill and wanted Sookie to be with someone else. I totally get that, I was rooting for Sookie and Sam the whole way through, but I didn't not like Bill. He just really came across as flat in this book. Hopefully that will change in the books to come.

The narration got on my nerves a bit. Her male voices were rediculous, but I'll still continue with listening anyway.

    "Unexpectedly pleased"

I bought Dead Until Dark on a whim because it was part of the Daily Deals sale, thinking that for $3.95, I had little to lose. I have never watched True Blood and I knew very little about this series prior to listening to this audiobook, other than it had something to do with vampires. I was unexpectedly pleased.

Johanna Parker's narration was funny and wry. She embodied Sookie Stackhouse so completely that I doubt the print book is even half as enjoyable as this recording, without Ms. Parker's voice to bring Sookie to life.

The story itself is fun and light, and doesn't take itself too seriously. The Bubba storyline kind of made me scratch my head (what was the point of that subplot?) but overall, it kept me hooked through to the end. I was surprised at how much I love Sookie's character.

I am late in discovering this series, but I'm definitely going to continue to the next books. A great find at a great price!

    "Couldn't get into it"

From the sample I thought I would enjoy this very different take on a vampire novel. But I found myself really not enjoying it. It seemed kind of depressing, and, really, does it have to be so erotic in a victimizer kind of way? I know, I know, it is a vampire novel, I just thought this would be a different take on it. It is just not my cup of tea. I know people really like her, but I had to stop listening part way through. Snooky is no Odd Thomas.

One of the better urban fantasy stories I've read actually. However I'm not a huge fan of urban fantasy in general.

"It a nice romance novel if that is what you want"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Its a good romance novel well read. I thought it would be more like the TV show. More of a mystery with really fun characters. I'm half way through the book and Tara has not been mentioned and Lafayette barely mentioned in passing. Im more comfortable reading sex scenes than I am hearing them. This is just a personal preference. The narrator performance is just fine.,

Has Dead Until Dark turned you off from other books in this genre?

I would rather read them then hear them.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Johanna Parker?

    No she is great!

What character would you cut from Dead Until Dark?

    No one

    Any additional comments?

Should have read the book before watching True Blood.

    "I Love Sookie Stackhouse!!!"

I waited to write a review until I listened to all 12 books. I loved them all. Sookie is a breath of fresh air small town girl who has had problems in the past with romance because she has the gift of reading minds. Imagine going on a date and hearing everything the guy was thinking... Not good. With vampires out of the closet, she finds she can't read vampire minds. Finally she can have true romance. There is also Mystery, Murder, and Mayhem and more supernatural creatures to be revealed!
I loved all the characters and how the story unfolded through all the books. It was bitter sweet that it had to come to an end. I was going to watch True Blood on HBO until friends told me it wasn't nearly as good as the books and had way too much porn!! I will leave the same review for all twelve books. Sookie just wouldn't be Sookie without Johanna Parker, I loved her voice!

    "Indifferent"

I'm indifferent about this series I started reading it due to the show but I almost liked the show more because it's switches from character stories. The whole " I'm so in love with Bill" drag seems to go on forever. But it wasn't a bad book, it was entertaining. It's just very simple. The narrating is what really made this audible enjoyable. I give it 4 starts.

"cute story, but lots of inconsistencies"

I'm new to reading Charlaine Harris in 2014 and I don't have HBO, so I've never heard of the associated TV show, but after reading the first three Sookie books I have to say they're cute and okay for a light read.

Of course I understand that this is fiction. But I'm very analytical, and once an author chooses to establish "facts" for how the beings in her imaginary world exist and interact, I expect those facts to continue as time goes by or to have changes and exceptions be acknowledged. For now I'll be generous and assume there are times when she wants to make an exception, rather than she can't keep track of her own SVM world facts and is a sloppy author.

So far, the first three books in this series each contain exceptions and/or errors in established SVM "facts" so I have to remind myself that they're just for fun and don't have to always make sense TO ME. But they are fun, and on sale they cost the price of a matinee movie, so I'll keep listening to see what happens next and continue to ignore the contradictions.

The narrator is average and doesn't do much to differentiate voices compared to most of the narrators I have enjoyed from other books. She tries to do a little bit with accents, so the main character is almost always identifiable when she is speaking.

    "Plot in line with series"

Based on a preview of the second book that is included at the end of the first, the books may diverge more from the HBO series as they advance. I have watched and enjoyed True Blood and I thought the books might contain depth as novels often do. This book was so close to the series, that I was kind of bored. It was enjoyable but not sure I will invest in the rest of the books.
