Publisher's summary

Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff."

He's been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.

In the small town of Bluestem, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There are a lot of reasons to hate him, Flowers discovers. In fact, he concludes, you'd probably have to dig around to find a person who doesn't despise Judd.

And that isn't even why Flowers came to Bluestem. Three weeks before, there'd been another murder, two, in fact, a doctor and his wife, the doctor found propped up in his backyard, both eyes shot out. Flowers knows two things: this wasn't a coincidence, and it had to be personal.

But just how personal is something even he doesn't realize, and may not find out until too late. Because the next victim may be himself.

Critic reviews

“A book that will keep you turning pages, guessing, and completely immersed - and engrossed - in whatever Sandford wants to throw at you. It’s a great ride, and Sandford proves that sometimes it’s not the character, it’s not the series, it’s the writer.” (The Post)

“An adrenaline rush peppered with laugh-out-loud moments." (Booklist)

A Who Dunnit!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I think I would like a little deeper character development.

Would you be willing to try another book from John Sandford? Why or why not?

Yes, I think I will, I'm intrigued.

What about Eric Conger???s performance did you like?

It was a fine performance, a clear narrative style and distinct character voices.

Could you see Dark of the Moon being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Since it's part of book series, I think it would do better as a movie series. I can't think who I'd like to see play the parts, most of the actors I'd choose would be too old for the parts.

Love John Sanford’s writing.

After finishing the complete Prey series by John Sanford which I loved, I was not sure if the Virgil Flowers series would measure up. But I was pleasantly surprised at how fluid and intriguing Dark if the Moon is written. I didn’t think I could love Virgil Flowers the way I loved Lucas Davenport but I definitely do. Can’t wait to listen to the next one in the series- Heat Lightning.

Kept me hanging on

I was wrong on my assumption (I always try to guess in the first couple chapters whodunnit). Very witty style and the narrator is fabulous.

Great plot

A drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat and except for the ‘low volume’ when someone is whispering (I can only guess what was said) a great book.
If it weren’t for the intelligible whispering I’d give this 5 stars across the board.

Soon as I started listening to this book I
remembered not only enjoying the author's
polishing of his work but the perfect work
of the narrator.

Pretty good, great setting and characters.

Liked the overall rhythm, not nail biting but moderately suspenseful. Ending was a little light but efficient. Unique main character with diverse co-stars.

Kept putting me to sleep!

The story itself was okay. I usually like Sandford, but the narrator was sooooooo monotone....every emotion, every character....it all sounded the same.
It kept putting me to sleep. I don't want to spoil anything, but this much action should NOT put you to sleep!
I s'pose I should be grateful, as I am a terrible insomniac...
This guy would be great for relaxation tapes.
I convinced my husband to listen with me on a long flight... I'm always telling him how great Audio books are, and that I was sure he'd love this one.......
This read did not convince him to become an Audiobook reader :(

Dark of the Moon

Very intriguing side step from he Lucas Davenport series of mysteries. Virgil Flowers is on his own investigating an increasingly deadly series of killings. Virgil is a bit of a nut and an interesting character. If you follow up this book with "Invisible Prey", some the references to Virgil are even funnier.

I love Virgil Flowers!

The story was intriguing. I liked the character development. I enjoyed the convoluted mystery of Dark of the Moon. I will continue to get more books with Virgil Flowers as the protagonist.
