Publisher's Summary

Guilt and grief have driven a wedge between long time crime-fighting partners psychologist Tony Hill and ex-DCI Carol Jordan. But just because they're not talking doesn't mean the killing stops.

Someone is killing women. Women who bear a disturbing resemblance to Carol Jordan. And when the evidence begins to point in a disturbing direction, thinking the unthinkable seems the only possible answer.

    "Val McDermid at her best"

From the opening chapter you know this is classic, quality crime writing at it's best and a very welcome return for Carol and Tony. This had me gripped from the start, by the plot, the superb characterisation and the relationship between Carol and Tony. There is some unpalatable violence towards women, however it is not gratuitous and is acceptable within the gripping plotline. This book reminds me just how well Val McDermid writes and that she is in a different league to most other crime writers. For those of who find the relationship between Tony and Carol so compelling this is a very satisfying listen.
I always enjoy Saul Reichlin's narration but did find some of the characters voices a little irritating- this, however is a minor fault as his rich, dark voice is well suited to the story.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

his inability to give different voices to the characters. It actively distracted me from the story.

    "A most gripping story"

I just finished listening to Cross And Burn and what a fabulous story! When they say that it keeps you on the edge of the seat it is quite true, I found myself many times seating at the very end of my chair in anticipation! For those who have read all the Jordan&Hill books, it is another step in their "relationship" after what happened in The Retribution, and it gives also a look at what is happening with Jordan's team members. Val McDermid can definitely write a good crime book and this was excellent. As far as the narrator is concerned, it is my first book read by Saul Reichlin and I am pleasantly surprised. I didn't really care much for DCI Fieldings' interpretation (strange scottish accent!) but all in all he did a good job.

    "As usual, a great story."
Would you try another book written by Val McDermid or narrated by Saul Reichlin?

I'd always listen to a book by Val McDermid. She tells a really good story and the magic between Carol and Tony is still there. I hope she won't give up on them.

Her characters become real people in your mind. The story was well put together, and very subtly she made different people seem suspicious. I did not sympathise with the killer, but McDermid still made me a bit sorry for him. Her bad guys are always human.
I wait with bated breath for her next novel.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Can't say one without the other. Carol and Tony. Magic.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

I will try to avoid listening to Saul Reichlin, to me it was torture. Had the book not been so good I would have given up.
Why did the boy have to sound like Frank Spencer from Some Mother's do 'ave 'em? Even Fielding sounded like that sometimes, whining. If a narrator can't do a Scottish accent he should not try to do it. His characterisation failed miserably.

Do you think Cross and Burn needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I want to hear more about Carol and Tony. The way Val McDermid describes their working together is enthralling.

"The worst narration in the world"

The only reason I finished this was because it was a great plot. Set in the North of England with strong women characters it was read by someone whose accent wandered all over the world but came nowhere near a Northern accent. If he had not tried to do an accent it would have been better. The flow of the narrative as he read it was to my ear unnatural and when he tried to do women it was just a disaster.

It is quite a long book but I never did get over the annoyance each time I listened.

    Any additional comments?

Val McDermid writes disturbing books that carry you forward with believable characters. Great detective stories. Saul Reichlin's reading never miss the different characters, the criminals cold and scary. The detectives engaging. His different voices are easy to follow. Great skill.

    "Cross And Burn???"

I enjoyed this book and would have liked to listen to it all in one sitting.

Saul Reichlin is an excellent reader and I enjoy watching Tony work, on screen, reading his stories and listening to them. This book did not disappoint.

I think that this is a book that many would enjoy. I just wish I had worked through the books, in the right order. So, if you are thinking that you might indulge, read Book 1 first. If you can't do that, this book can still be enjoyed as a stand alone.
