Cross and Burn

Guilt and grief have driven a wedge between long time crime-fighting partners psychologist Tony Hill and ex-DCI Carol Jordan. But just because they're not talking doesn't mean the killing stops. Someone is killing women. Women who bear a disturbing resemblance to Carol Jordan. And when the evidence begins to point in a disturbing direction, thinking the unthinkable seems the only possible answer.

    "Val McDermid at her best"

From the opening chapter you know this is classic, quality crime writing at it's best and a very welcome return for Carol and Tony. This had me gripped from the start, by the plot, the superb characterisation and the relationship between Carol and Tony. There is some unpalatable violence towards women, however it is not gratuitous and is acceptable within the gripping plotline. This book reminds me just how well Val McDermid writes and that she is in a different league to most other crime writers. For those of who find the relationship between Tony and Carol so compelling this is a very satisfying listen.
I always enjoy Saul Reichlin's narration but did find some of the characters voices a little irritating- this, however is a minor fault as his rich, dark voice is well suited to the story.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

his inability to give different voices to the characters. It actively distracted me from the story.

    "A most gripping story"

I just finished listening to Cross And Burn and what a fabulous story! When they say that it keeps you on the edge of the seat it is quite true, I found myself many times seating at the very end of my chair in anticipation! For those who have read all the Jordan&Hill books, it is another step in their "relationship" after what happened in The Retribution, and it gives also a look at what is happening with Jordan's team members. Val McDermid can definitely write a good crime book and this was excellent. As far as the narrator is concerned, it is my first book read by Saul Reichlin and I am pleasantly surprised. I didn't really care much for DCI Fieldings' interpretation (strange scottish accent!) but all in all he did a good job.

    "As usual, a great story."
Would you try another book written by Val McDermid or narrated by Saul Reichlin?

I'd always listen to a book by Val McDermid. She tells a really good story and the magic between Carol and Tony is still there. I hope she won't give up on them.

Her characters become real people in your mind. The story was well put together, and very subtly she made different people seem suspicious. I did not sympathise with the killer, but McDermid still made me a bit sorry for him. Her bad guys are always human.
I wait with bated breath for her next novel.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Can't say one without the other. Carol and Tony. Magic.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

I will try to avoid listening to Saul Reichlin, to me it was torture. Had the book not been so good I would have given up.
Why did the boy have to sound like Frank Spencer from Some Mother's do 'ave 'em? Even Fielding sounded like that sometimes, whining. If a narrator can't do a Scottish accent he should not try to do it. His characterisation failed miserably.

Do you think Cross and Burn needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I want to hear more about Carol and Tony. The way Val McDermid describes their working together is enthralling.

    "A sequel to The Retribution"
If you could sum up Cross and Burn in three words, what would they be?

    Predictable

Would you recommend Cross and Burn to your friends? Why or why not?

Of course, Val McDermid is a terrific writer. However it would be recommended to read The Retribution first and perhaps a couple of others in the series.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I am not sure why Saul Reichlin decided to read the book so slowly. Perhaps if the pace had been stepped up a bit, the main characters would not have come across so maudlin and pre-occupied with their life. Whilst the subject matter left little room for any light heartedness the plodding nature of the narration seemed to drag you down

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had little emotional reaction to this book, only to to hope that Val McDermid will finally unite Tony and Carol and then to proceed to write the cracking crime thrillers she is famous for.

    Any additional comments?

Worth listening to if you have followed this series. Not my favourite from this author who is high on my list of top crime writers. However Cross and Burn felt more like a sequel and perhaps its purpose is to open up new story lines and revitalise rather tired characters. I look forward to the next instalment in this series with the hope that perhaps Michael Tudor Barnes will return to narrate it.

    "Cross And Burn"

I did not know that there was a series in these books and did in fact do this one first, I was not disappointed its a gripping crime story with Carol the detective and Tony the psychologist it does in fact go back to why these two have called it a day on their relationship, has Carol has a very grisly background and obviously Tony was involved in that, after this book i have added more of this author in my wish list.

What disappointed you about Cross and Burn?

The reader and style is so slow I had to turn it up to 1.25 to listen- ponderous!!- and story line so boringly unoriginal- I had many attempts but couldn't finish this. Truly a waste of money for me.
