Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Barbara Rosenblat's expert performance as Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is imaginative, witty, and great fun. Rosenblat has tremendous vocal range, capturing many characters of different genders and ethnicities. This rich and lively story is the first in Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series, and I can't wait to listen to the rest of them. — Diana Dapito

Publisher's summary

Amelia Peabody inherited two things from her father: a considerable fortune and an unbendable will. The first allowed her to indulge in her life's passion. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all.

Narrator didn’t work for me

I loved the book years ago and even met Elizabeth Peters. This just didn’t work for me. The narrator didn’t give Amelia any humor or warmth. Amelia without humor is just fussy and rude.

Very enjoyable

Adorable characters, good story (though predictable), and terrific narration make this a very enjoyable "read".

terrific narrator and book

Barbara Rosenblat absolutely had me giggling through the entire book. Her interpretation of Amelia Peabody is so hilarious. The pretention and sarcastic remarks from all the characters were great. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Yikes!

Would you try another book from Elizabeth Peters and/or Barbara Rosenblat?

Yes for Peters, never again for Rosenblat.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Absurd voices. Made Emerson sound like a loony 95-year-old man. Didn't really seem to understand the characters, making them all cartoonish. Overkill, overdone, over the top.

Quite an Adventure

This is my second listen to this story. The first was years ago, so I hardly remembered that I had listened once before. It feels like a classic book. It’s the foundation for many more Emerson and Peabody stories. Elizabeth Peters is the perfect reader as only her voice, for me, is the real Peabody.

Wonderfull!

What a wonderfull story and how well it is told by Barbara Rosenblat. Elizabeth Peters wrote a wonderfully exciting story about a lady and her companion on a trip through Egypt. It involves a mummy, competing gentlemen for the hand of a lady. Laughter and suspense go hand in hand in this tale of adventure.

The first in a series of great adventures

I have loved Amelia and Emerson for many years and when my bookclub selected Crocodile on the Sandbank I decided to give it a listen. What a great decision! The reader was perfect as the voice of Amelia Peabody and even did an excellent job of creating the "Roaring" voice of Emerson.
Adventire, humor and romance. What more can you want?
I would give this reading 6 starts if I could.

crocodile on the sandbank

I thought this book tended to drag in parts. It was somewhat predictable except who the villian was in the end.

Peabody is like no other

I love the audio version with Barbara Rosenblat as the reader. I have been listen to audio books since the 1990's and this series about the indominable Emelia Peabody are the ones that got me hooked. Barbara Rosenblat IS Peabody. I love the way she portrays Emerson and Ramses as well.

Wonderfully Read!

Barbara Rosenblat made me an audio book convert. I have always hated to be read to, but Ms. Rosenblat has an amazing voice and a versitility that have won me over. No Amelia Peabody mystery should be without her.
