Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Barbara Rosenblat's expert performance as Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is imaginative, witty, and great fun. Rosenblat has tremendous vocal range, capturing many characters of different genders and ethnicities. This rich and lively story is the first in Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series, and I can't wait to listen to the rest of them. — Diana Dapito

Publisher's summary

Amelia Peabody inherited two things from her father: a considerable fortune and an unbendable will. The first allowed her to indulge in her life's passion. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all.

Complete enjoyment, from start to finish

Would you consider the audio edition of Crocodile on the Sandbank to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print version

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I knew where things were going pretty early on in the story, but was completely immersed in the story telling, so looked forward to the reading, through to the conclusion.

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

Her voices were great and her inflections for the main character were hilarious.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had trouble turning it off to move on to others things!

Amazing

This book series has always been one of my favorites, and the narrator just makes it that much better. I've actually always preference the audio book version of this story, only because the narrator is so amazing.

Rereading a favorite series

This classic series narrated by the incomparable Barbara Rosenblat is great fun.
Lots of humor, lots of great characters, and an indomitable parasol wielding heroine, who can bully and control anyone but her lovable Bull of a husband, and her brilliant rascal of a son. Archaeology in the victorian era in egypt is a background for intrique, mystery and murder, with the Emersons on the trail of the murderer as long as it doen't interfer too much with the completing next great find ahead of the professional thieves and incompetent government officials. I highly recomend it! Enjoy!

Light

The narrator is really good, and the characters are ok, but there's a campy, Jules Verne quality to the story that makes it feel lightweight, and forgettable. I do not plan on continuing with the series, although I don't rule out the possibility.

An enjoyable, light listen

What did you like best about this story?

After a few heavier stories, I was looking for an enjoyable, engaging book that provided light entertainment. At first, I wasn't sure if this book would hold my attention, but pretty quickly, it drew me in with the great narration and dry humor. I wasn't disappointed at all!

Which character – as performed by Barbara Rosenblat – was your favorite?

While I enjoyed the author's work, I want to buy more in the series so that I can hear more of Rosenblat's narration! There wasn't a specific character that stood out; I enjoyed them all!

Miss Peabody is awesome

I love the historical setting of this book coupled with an impeccably strong main character. Miss Peabody. She's wonderful, and her ability to ruffle the feathers of virtually everyone around her is priceless. The narrator was excellent and did a wonderful job of differentiating the characters. It reminded me a little of the shenanigans of the Mummy movies; it was highly enjoyable, very humorous, and a wonderful story.
