Publisher's summary

Northern New Jersey has a new local hero on its cultural crime turf. He's Andy Carpenter, the Paterson defense attorney who can sling a quip as fast as he can outmaneuver a snarling prosecutor. Acclaimed author David Rosenfelt's first novel was nominated for an Edgar Award. Now, in this new novel, the intrepid lawyer is thrust into the spotlight where he risks becoming a media victim...of the most fatal kind.

His streak of murder case acquittals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named the Tara Foundation after his own beloved golden retriever. Yet after turning down cases left and right, Andy Carpenter thinks he's facing a midlife crisis.

When a friend, a newspaper owner, calls in a favor and asks him to protect his star reporter, Andy is less than thrilled. His new client is Daniel Cummings, a journalist who is being used as a mouthpiece by a brutal serial killer. Things only get worse when Daniel is discovered near the body of the murderer's latest victim. And after Andy himself starts collecting anonymous death threats, he hears the news every defense lawyer dreads...and moves to within a dangerous keystroke of becoming tomorrow's obituary.

Critic reviews

"A fun rollercoaster ride." (Publishers Weekly)
"The real charm of this series lies in the wit of its affable narrator, who is not about to let an ongoing capital trial keep him from walking his beloved golden retriever, betting the point spread, or losing on the stock market. Add to this a likable supporting cast and a low-key love interest, and you have the legal-thriller genre's waggish rejoinder to Anthony Bruno and Janet Evanovich. A sure bet." (Booklist)

Excellent mystery

I love the Andy carpenter series. It has good characters, good mysteries and interesting trial work this one was a different twist than the first couple I’ve read. The narrator is also excellent and I appreciate Carpenter’s sense of humor

Bury the Lead

Another great mystery by David Rosenfelt. I found it entertaining with an interesting plot and as always, very likeable characters. Love the witty/humorous dialog. I was upset that this audio is only available in an abridged version. Still, a good listen.

First in series of books.

I like the narrator. I like the balance between cozy and “detective-type” story. I read the last one so I know the writing gets better...although it’s not bad.

It never gets old

A good read never gets old. Convoluted plots carefully explained after the good guys win, what a great way to while away the time. 3 times Rosenfelt and Gardener have kept me unwilling to turn the books in this series off. I’m so glad there are more. Keep writing Mr. Rosenfelt. Keep reading Mr. Gardener. I’ll keep listening.

Andy you’re my hero.

I love David Rosenfelt’s books, they are laugh out loud funny. While David Rosenfelt has a bit of a formula for the story lines he creates, they are always good. This is my second time around listening to the series. I love it just as much as the first time around. But not only do I love the main character of his books, the side characters are ones I love and look forward to finding out what they are up to. Kevin while the wimpiest nerd alive, I love to find out what disease his hypochondriac brain has come up with. Love Grover Gardner he does Andy so well.

Very twisty!

The defense lawyer, the crazed killer, the mob boss, and a whole lot of twists and surprises. Just when things look beyond bad, they take a turn for the worst. Just when you think you know the answers, the questions change. A good read!
Grover Gardner knows just how to deliver all the snarkiness this book presents.

Abridged

This was my 3rd book in the series and I really like all of them. I didn't notice that this one was abridged as opposed to the first two books I listened to. I was not happy about this, and after looking further I realized you can't get an unabridged version. This just doesn't add up to me, and feels somewhat underhanded.
On the positive side, I just recently discovered David Rosenfelt and I'm completely impressed by his talent. The books are enjoyable and his plot and character developments are superb. I happen to be from the area he writes about, and it's amazingly true to reality. I will probably continue to listen to more of this series, even with the unfortunate abridged issue. It should be noted that the narration is totally equal to the book. Spot on accents. In fact the characters sound like my neighbors!
I have listened to a few books in excess of 30 hours, and I think I would probably have preferred an abridged version. These books however are quite normal in length and the shortened versions don't make sense.

Another good Andy Carpenter novel

Great series of books. But why have they put 60 seconds of music at the beginning and end of each chapter? Really annoying.
