Publisher's summary

"Ralph Cosham’s excellent narration of Louise Penny’s newest mystery demonstrates why a terrific narrator is an author’s best partner." —AudioFile Magazine

Bury Your Dead is a novel about life and death—and all the mystery that remains—from #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is on break from duty in Three Pines to attend the famed Winter Carnival up north. He has arrived in this beautiful, freezing city not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. Still, violent death is inescapable—even here, in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where one obsessive academic’s quest for answers will lead Gamache down a dark path . . .

Meanwhile, Gamache is receiving disturbing news from his hometown village. Beloved bistro owner Olivier was recently convicted of murder but everyone—including Gamache—believes that he is innocent. Who is behind this sinister plot? Now it’s up to Gamache to solve this killer case . . . and relive a terrible event from his own past before he can begin to bury his dead.

“Few writers in any genre can match Penny’s ability to combine heartbreak and hope.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Critic reviews

“Ralph Cosham's excellent narration of Louise Penny's newest mystery demonstrates why a terrific narrator is an author's best partner…My only quibble is that the Penny-Cosham team kept me listening past my bedtime.” —AudioFile magazine

“This sixth entry in Agatha and Anthony award-winning author Penny's Armand Gamache series is among the best…The solution to both killings as well as the event that drew Gamache to Quebec in the first place are all slowly and expertly revealed.” —Library Journal

Tears on the treadmill...

If you've been following along with the Chief Inspector Gamache /Three Pines series thus far, prepare to have your heart dragged through a brutal winter season. I didn't title this "tears on the treadmill" for nothing. I listened to these books to pass the time in the car, during housework, and at the gym, and the final "pages" of this book had me showing my feelings to all my fellow gym-goers.

This is one of the absolute best in the entire series. If I could give it more stars, I would. One note on this though - this was the first time that the "case" at the center of the novel did not have my full attention. It's still a good one and it is steeped in rich history, which makes it even better, but by now you are so attached to the recurring characters that you will be aching to get back to that plot line. I can't really say more than that, you need to experience it for yourself. Just one thing - grab some tissues first.

Not all can stay buried...

I highly suggest reading this series in order, "to know the characters is to love them". In this addition to the series there are three different stories going on simultaneously.

While on leave in Quebec Chief Inspector Gamache, a highly renowned investigator with the Canadian police, is pulled in as a consultant to help solve a murder that can only be solved by uncovering lost historical information. The second of the three stories is uncovered throughout as Gamache and Jean Guy Beauvoir, his second in command, re-account parts of a recent tragedy, that left them both injured and pretty shaken up. The last and my favorite, takes place, of corse, in "Three Pines", a wonderful sleepy little town where on Sundays you can wear your pajamas to the local bistro, which is just one of the many eclectic quirks that make it so special. Chief Gamache unofficially sends Inspector Beauvoir, to "Three Pines" hopeing that this distraction will keep him from obsessing about the tragedy, by reopening, "unofficially", a past investigation that resulted in a conviction of a long time resident, that still just doesn't sit right with the Chief.

Another hit by LP. I found that in this addition to the series, there was less cutting humor or philosophical quips, but more raw vulnerability shown by the characters. A great story that provided a deeper look into the mind and heart of our illustrious Chief Gamache.

Another riveting story

I love Louise Penny’s writing ! I am not a crime or mystery reader usually. These stories speak to the complexities of human emotions, choices, and relationships. I especially found Bury your Dead a deep story of difficult situations, regret, and integrity. Top that with parallel plots and it’s just a fascinating story!

Another complex story

I love the stories by Louise Penny. They always keep me guessing. Well read by the narrator. The end conversation w the author was interesting, as well.

Best Gamache Yet!

I actually laugh out loud in most of Louise Penny’s books. In this one I cried, too. Love these characters more with each book. And the stories make my commute fly by.

Penny' Best So Far

I loved this story. Two interwoven themes and the setting in Quebec City was fascinating. I want to visit it. One detail of the 3 pines murder bothered me but I won't spoil the ending.

What constitutes a crime in Canada?

I love the series but sometimes it seems like fantasy. Are we to believe that in Canada it isn't a crime to move a body (even if you didn't commit the murder) to another location just to incriminate someone else? Olivier and Mark should have both been in prison.
Never completely understood how the kidnapped agent died. I would need to listen to the last part again.
I know that each book is a different season but it made it seem that Yvette Nichol had spent years doing another job in this book which, takes place in winter. yet, in the spring she was part of Gamache's team. Confusing.

Correcting Past Mistakes and Letting them Go

I love that there are 2 stories: murder mystery and belonging. Lovely writing, bits of humor and in this book sadness but forgiveness, too. Wrongs righted! Justice served!
