Publisher's summary

"Ralph Cosham’s excellent narration of Louise Penny’s newest mystery demonstrates why a terrific narrator is an author’s best partner." —AudioFile Magazine

Bury Your Dead is a novel about life and death—and all the mystery that remains—from #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is on break from duty in Three Pines to attend the famed Winter Carnival up north. He has arrived in this beautiful, freezing city not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. Still, violent death is inescapable—even here, in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where one obsessive academic’s quest for answers will lead Gamache down a dark path . . .

Meanwhile, Gamache is receiving disturbing news from his hometown village. Beloved bistro owner Olivier was recently convicted of murder but everyone—including Gamache—believes that he is innocent. Who is behind this sinister plot? Now it’s up to Gamache to solve this killer case . . . and relive a terrible event from his own past before he can begin to bury his dead.

“Few writers in any genre can match Penny’s ability to combine heartbreak and hope.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“This sixth entry in Agatha and Anthony award-winning author Penny's Armand Gamache series is among the best…The solution to both killings as well as the event that drew Gamache to Quebec in the first place are all slowly and expertly revealed.” —Library Journal

WONDERFUL SERIES

I came upon Louise Penny by chance and am so glad I did. The novels are excellent and make me want to learn about the history of Quebec

I always think I'll be bored with these, but never

I always hesitate before spending a credit on an Inspector Gamache, Three Pines mystery; and often it takes me awhile to get into the almost monotone, soft-spoken and unanimated narration. But it never fails to captivate me; and as underwhelming as he is, Gamache always takes the high road and lets the "little grey cells" (a la Christie) solve the crime. It is, I realize, an armchair mystery, much like those of Agatha Christie, where, the clues are all there, you just need to try to beat Miss Marple, Poirot, or in this case, Gamache to the punch by figuring it out. It is really much more of a challenge than the more demonstrative and bloodier types of mysteries. As always, this was extremely forthright, involved, and a thoroughly enjoyable read. I came on board with her more recent books; so, I am going backwards, but enjoying the ride.

Captivating

This story line grabbed me right from the beginning. I have sometimes found that the Gamache books wander along ( delightfully so) but this one jumped quickly to a three headed investigation all of which were uniquely interesting. I was fascinated by the historic story line, casually intrigued by the reviewed investigation, and anchored to the traumatic telling. Despite being very different all 3 lines of inquiry were personal stories that needed time to tell. Very well done!

Best so far

Love this series so much!
And the performer is amazing! (Just wish he would pause a bit longer when going from one scene to the next.)

Almost in tears from the joy of listening to this

This is book #6 of the Inspector Gamache Series. Each was written by Louise Penny and read by Ralph Cosham. I have loved each one, but this one, especially, gave me an odd feeling of joy and fortunate privilege of being on the receiving end of their joined talents. I have listened to dozens and dozens of fine books on Audible and elsewhere, but never before have I felt close to tears from the sheer beauty of the experience as I did while listening to this one. I have had a similar feeling with music, when a particular chord or chord progression lifts me into the air, so beautiful it hurts. How lucky we all are Louise Penny has written and Ralph Cosham has recorded 15 mysteries for Gamache and his team to solve and for us to experience.

These Characters have truly come alive.

Start with "Still Life" and work your way through. You're in for a treat, like a glass of very good wine. It should be enjoyed not rushed through. Don't expect high energy thrills. These are character driven stories. I'd get into more detail, but I don't like having to give reviews from my phone.

You'll like them. I promise.

Series Nail Biter

Louise Penny has entertained me through several Inspector Gamache books. In this book she takes us through a very tense police situation. It was gripping at times and challenging to put down. If you love her series you'll enjoy this book also. Just know it has more tension and action than previous books.

Interesting and entertaining

If you could sum up Bury Your Dead in three words, what would they be?

Complex, emotional, insightful

Have you listened to any of Ralph Cosham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoy Ralph Cosham's narration of this series. He doesn't overdo anything, the emotion is appropriate. I can differentiate between all the characters. Some might say he's a bit monotone, but this series doesn't lend to a lot of dramatic reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I don't know that "extreme" is the word I'd use. There were several intertwining stories and all of them kept me guessing till the end. There were times that yes, I cried. And times I laughed at character comments, but that's not unusual in this series. Mostly, I was curious to the point I wanted to listen to the whole story in one sitting!

Any additional comments?

I know nothing about Quebec history, and there is a fair bit generally referred to in this book. I enjoyed that aspect a lot. Eventually it focused on one historical figure, and I'm not sure how much of that specific side story was real or embellished, but it was part of what made this such an interesting story! Also, if you haven't already read the first books in the series, I strongly suggest reading them first. At least read A Brutal Telling. One of the side stories in this book is focused on what happened in it.

Louise Penny's best yet.

We were allowed into the heart and mind of inspector Gamache. The riveting plot was multi-faceted, suspenseful and touching. I love these characters, the descriptions of their senses and their frailty as well as strength.
