Publisher's summary

The "Big Three" are a trio of inmates locked up in the Minnesota Security Hospital over the years, each a particularly vicious serial killer, each with his own distinct style and propensities. Everybody feels much safer knowing that they're behind bars. Except...there's a new killer on the loose. And his handiwork bears a disturbing resemblance to some of the finer points practiced by the Big Three, details that never even made the papers.

Lucas Davenport and his team quickly hone in on a possible suspect, a man named Charlie Pope, who was released from the same hospital prison a few weeks earlier, and who now seems to have cut himself free from his court-imposed ankle bracelet and disappeared. But is he really the one? And why do the Big Three look so agitated?

Brilliantly suspenseful, consistently surprising, once again, Sandford has outdone himself.

Critic reviews

"John Sandford delivers yet another blistering tale from the life of Lucas Davenport, surely one of the most attractive cops on the crime-fiction beat today.... The plot is complex and full of red herrings." (The Associated Press)

"Sandford ratchets up the tension and suspense in tough, spare prose that shows us rather than tells us what is going on.... Broken Prey more than lives up to its predecessors in what has become a bestselling franchise in the mystery/thriller genre." (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

"Nonstop tension." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Supremebear

Supremebear John Sandford is a beast. I just enjoy the MN storylines. Richard Ferrone told the story great. Would like the hear a females voice for the female parts. More diversity

Best Prey

What a treat! Thus far, I've read the entire Davenport series in hard copy. Having Richard Ferrone tell me this tale made all the difference. His voice and delivery are just right for the gritty story.
In my book, this ranks as one of the best Prey stories to date. Davenport is working with his usual cast of characters plus a couple of sheriff departments to catch a truly deranged killer. There's lots of action and suspense, and enough plot twists and red herrings to keep a process junkie like me happy. I literally did not stop listening for the last two hours unless I absolutely had to. Highly recommended for Sandford regulars as well as those new to the author.

Best Prey book yet!

I have been in a Lucas Davenport frame of mind of late so, starting from the beginning, am listening to the entire series. The rock and roll list and the dark humor woven throughout the story make this one stand out in a truly great series of books. Excellent!

Broken Prey

Typical of Sanford, non stop heart pounding lissening, gets a little slow midway through chap[ters 16-23 but picks up to a dramatic intense ending

best one so far

I love the series but this was the most enjoyable one so far. Too bad the series wasn't turned into movie adaptations.

Who, what, where, when? Have to read it

You could just label the series, how to write Suspense novels. This is another great one and the character development and story lines of Davenport Weather Sloan Schrake Letti Rose-Marie and others. There’s so much miss direction that keeps you going and wondering what’s happening. The only day I’ll take at this book is 100 greatest songs of rock ‘n’ roll era. Obviously nobody’s going to agree totally but you got to be nuts if you don’t include the Beatles songs that are included on this list just don’t belong.

Talented and spell-bounding writer

Would you consider the audio edition of Broken Prey to be better than the print version?

I've never read the book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Oh god yes! He did a good job of throwing me off. I did not know who the psychopath was until the end. I am so glad it was not one of those cliche books where the killer is revealed so early on in the story that continuing seems pointless. I had to find out who this crazy man was and hoping that Sloan would not retire. They make a great pair.

What about Richard Ferrone’s performance did you like?

Love it. He did an awesome job. I loved the variations in voices and he read as if he wrote the book himself. He was intimate with the characters and the way he read made me feel as if I was there. It was so vivid and well done. GREAT JOB!!!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. When Lucas woke up the next morning and Weather was already there asleep. She loves him so much.

Fantastic! All of the "Prey" are godd and this one is ethe best ever. John Sanford weaves a great stroy and keeps you on the edge of your seat biting your finger nails with eachpage. Can't wait until he writes a new one.
