Publisher's summary

Grady Adams lives a simple, solitary life deep in the Colorado mountains. Here the 35-year-old carpenter works out of a converted barn, crafting exquisite one-of-a-kind furniture. There's little about this strong yet gentle man to suggest the experiences that have alienated him from the contemporary world. But that is about to change.

One day, while hiking, Grady spots a pair of stunningly beautiful furred animals unlike anything he's ever seen. They flee the instant they detect his presence, but the mystery of that brief encounter remains. In the days ahead, Grady will approach the creatures again, gaining their trust but coming no closer to solving their mystery. For this he enlists the help of an old friend, veterinarian Camellia "Cammy" Rivers, who, in turn, is stunned - and enchanted - by Grady's new "pets." But while Grady and Cammy carefully observe these enigmatic animals for clues to their origin, they, too, are being watched.

Soon Grady's home and hundreds of square miles of surrounding wilderness will be placed under quarantine by Homeland Security. And Grady, Cammy, and the two creatures they've come to feel they must protect at all costs find themselves virtual prisoners - and the unwilling focus of an army of biologists, naturalists, and research scientists. But it's a stunning event no one could have foreseen that convinces Grady and Cammy to do the unthinkable: to escape with the two creatures on a riveting race for freedom.

"Koontz is a superb plotter and wordsmith. He chronicles the hopes and fears of our time in broad strokes and fine detail, using popular fiction to explore the human condition." ( USA Today)
"Koontz is at the top of his game...both a great storyteller and a novelist of ideas...one of the most important novelists writing today." ( National Review)

Just meh

Although I love Dean Koontz, this story left me hanging. Great build up, but I’m not keen on cliffhangers.

Amazing story! So many elements coming together!

A rich and complex scenario with multiple characters having their different histories.
I had to listen to it twice before the story became clear. The revelation at the end was truly priceless. I’d like to try that new world!

Credit worthy

Not a waste of a credit. This book was not one of his best, but what I would consider "decent". Some of Koontz's books are very memorable (Intensity, Watchers, any of the Odd books) but this one I'm not so sure.
It's not one to avoid, but if you haven't "read" some of his others, I'd read those first.

Breathless Review

The story, Breathless, ended with a hint of a sequel. Readers will be encouraged by the story premise of damaged humans, due to life traumatic experiences, receiving healing as creation shifts into a higher reality. The process of acceptance, forgiveness, synchronicity and patience is deeply interwoven with characters in this book and contributes to being the page turner it is. My only disappointment was the ending which went a little flat for me. Overall, I loved listening to the audio version of, Breathless.

disappointing

The ending was a bit anticlimactic. usually it's also a little easier to follow the different characters. just didn't feel like they came together in a cohesive way.

Beautiful Story

Beautifully done story filled with hope. There’s a lot of storylines that come together at the end. Very satisfying read. I only wish that it were longer.

The narrator has a pleasant voice, but he’s not the best narrator that I’ve heard. He’s still very enjoyable to listen to though.

A good read

Another entertaining Koontz book. My only criticism is I wish it was longer with more twists.
