Publisher's Summary

Thanks to a heart transplant, former FBI agent Terrell McCaleb is enjoying a quiet retirement, renovating the fishing boat he lives on in Los Angeles Harbor. But McCaleb's calm seas turn choppy when a story in the "What Happened To?" column of the LA Times brings him face-to-face with the sister of the woman whose heart now beats in his chest. From her, McCaleb learns a terrible truth: that the donor of his heart was not killed in an accident, as he'd been told, but was murdered.

Wracked with guilt over the fact that he's alive because another human being was killed, McCaleb embarks on a private investigation of his donor's murder - a crime as horrific as anything he ever encountered as a serial killer investigator for the FBI.

I am someone who enjoys audible books very much now that they exist. As a young student (real young) I can remember a teacher telling me how books can transport people to different places & open up a whole new world. This is how listening to audible books make me feel. Now if I can just stop falling asleep while listening to them at night I would be fine. Ha ha

"One of the best books I ever listened to"
What made the experience of listening to Blood Work the most enjoyable?

The unusual, fresh, & suspenseful story line. The intrigue, & mystery never let up or even slowed down. I was sitting on the edge of my seat, bed - whatever throughout this book. I could not second guess any part of the investigation or outcome. I loved the narrator Dick Hill - what a job he did. Great!
As a certified Hypnotherapist myself the hypnoses segment left npthing out & the facinating clue at the end blew my mind. I understand M. Conelly overwrote on this book. I would love to see another book written with the left overs.
I love it when the writer takes the time to do proper researh into the subject matters becasue this is a real treat to learn. The book stayed balanced & held my interest through out to the end. As a reader I was totally pulled into the story.

What other book might you compare Blood Work to and why?

I will let you know when & if I find one

    Which scene was your favorite?

Could not decide each one was written & pulled me along with it

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I really don't care just make the movie please!

    Any additional comments?

Thank you Mike Connelly. Your the best!

    "A great Story......."
Where does Blood Work rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Blood Work was not my first choice in the Connelly bookcase, but now I am so glad that I did download it. I was for some reason was very reticent about the blurb - but while listening to this narrative I became transfixed. Connelly truly knows how to weave a story and grab the readers attention. The twist were not what I was expecting and that was exciting, though I did feel the ending was a little rushed, but hey, I am not a writer!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Terrell McCaleb was great, I liked his methodical approach to paperwork and to chasing the "Tell". Connelly allows us to journey with Terrell and this allows us to make a connection with him as he discovers information but also as he travels through his health concerns.
Winston was also a character that I liked, her strong and fair nature appealed to me and this helped create a balance with other police in the story.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Don't mind Dick Hill at all, I find him easy to listen to and soothing to the ear. Nice Job!

    Any additional comments?

    A good listen...Thanks

    "Connelly and Hill deliver again!"

I am a great fan of both Michael Connelly and Dick Hill. Connelly moves the story along with just the right amount of character introspection. I just recently saw the movie again and wanted to see how the book and movie track each other. Thankfully, all the basics of the book made it to the movie. There are, however, sufficient differences to make both enjoyable in their own right, whether enjoying the book or movie alone, or enjoying both.

I usually like to see the movie first because, out of necessity, there are usually things in the book that are left out of the movie and it easier to accept new facts, characters and information than it is to look in vain for them. Also, having seen actors populate the characters, I have a visual reference for the characters when reading the book. Clearly, I think that Terry McCaleb is much younger than Clint Eastwood, but there was still a face to the character.

Most of Connelly's novels occupy the same universe with characters freely moving between them. Therefore, if you are Harry Bosch fan, you might want to read this before reading 'A Darkness More than Night' as Terry McCaleb figures prominently in that story.

I thoroughly enjoy Dick Hill's narrations across a number series that I follow. I get a little disappointed when I listen to one of a series' books narrated by another no matter how accomplished they may be. I am just getting into the Jack Reacher series and am pleased to see that he has narrated many of them also. Keep up the Good Work.

This is the first Michael Connelly book that I have read and I was captivated by the very good story line from start to finish. Dick Hill's narration was outstanding.

"Performance by Dick Hill was excellent!"

Dick Hill's narration brought life to the characters and I've moved him to the top of my favorite narrators list. Of course, the book by Michael Connelly was excellent.

    "Excellent Listen"

The book kept me interested up to the end and the narrator was excellent.

    A minor point.
I think I might have missed a date reference about the time frame of the story. The main character seemed to spent an inordinate amount of time searching out pay phones, watching flying toasters and waiting for dial up connections. I was surprised to see a copyright date of 2004.

What can I say. It was OK. Entertaining. Not a waste of a credit but nothing to get too excited about. The plot did take some radical twists, but in all nothing about this book had me hanging on every word or anxious to get back to it.

    "Blood Work Works Well"
If you could sum up Blood Work in three words, what would they be?

    Satisfying mult-layered procedural.

What did you like best about this story?

The vast majority of Blood Work is the micro-detailed examination of evidence by Terry McCaleb as he tries to locate a killer. The characters aren't fully developed until later, in parallel with plot complications, so the focus during the early stages, when the book needs to grab you and hold you, is on the evidence. Fortunately, it holds together, unfolding with the peeling of the layers. Slowly (maybe too slowly for some), but surely.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the third Michael Connelly book I've heard Dick Hill narrate, and I've heard him read other titles as well. I didn't like him at first -- found his voice too growly during The Poet. But he's certainly grown on me, especially because his style is so apropos for Connelly's work.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Already been done -- not sure what the actual tag line was (could look it up) -- but I would say, "Blood Work -- A Shot in the Heart".

    "SOLID THRILLER... with mild action..."

If you like crime dramas, this one is pretty well done. The fact that the protagonist is just recovering from a heart transplant removes the amount of physical action in the novel, but the result is more focus on the details of the crime itself, which was good in this case. The book is obviously dated because everyone is having to "find a phone" and there was a painful scene detailing how to boot up a computer and open a file browser...haha. It's not gonna be in my top 10, but overall it was a page turner with characters you care about. I listened comfortably at 2X speed and the narration was very good. I hope this helps someone. Later.
