Publisher's Summary

Easy Rawlins, L.A.'s most reluctant detective, comes home one day to find Easter, the daughter of his friend, Christmas Black, left on his doorstep. Easy knows that this could only mean that ex-marine Black is probably dead, or will be soon.

But Easter's appearance is only the beginning, as Easy is immersed in a sea of problems. The love of his life is marrying another man, and his friend Mouse is wanted for the murder of a father of 12. As he's searching for a clue to Christmas Black's whereabouts, two suspicious MPs hire him to find his friend Black on behalf of the U.S. Army.

Easy's investigation brings him to a blonde woman, Faith Laneer, whose past is as dark as her beauty is bright. As Easy begins to put the pieces together, he realizes that Black's disappearance has its roots in Vietnam, and that Faith might be in a world of danger.

What the Critics Say

"Mosley knows his territory as intimately as a lover knows his beloved, and Easy's tortuous progression from man-child to man may have reached its climax in this searing and moving novel." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Good but not great"

Good book not one of the best in the series but still very good. I dislike these dramatic endings he writes only to retcon them in the next book.

    "GREAT"

Easy Rawlings is my favorite series. This book ended in a real cliffhanger. Hurry, I can hardly wait for the next book.

    "Say its not so"

I give this a better review than the others. I have gotton to feel I know Easy thru the years and the view of a black man makes it all the more interesting. This series is an easy read and fun to just go with the flow of the characters and events.

    "Mosely phones it in"

Disappointing conclusion to a great series. A so so story, and poor Easy's become conflicted to the point of absurdity. I loved the other books and the narrator is great. If it wasn't a relatively short audio book I would have given in to my instinct to delete it part way through.

"Not his best, but a mediocre Mosley's still great"

The story isn't as heartfelt or convoluted as some of his earlier works...or as poignant and relevant as 'Little Scarlet'...but Mosley's poetic prose and the way he airbrushes his characters make for great storytelling as usual. And Michael Boatman's narration gives voice to a classic detective hero as well as the angels and demons he navigates in finding the truth. Some readers overdo female voices or drop three or four octaves when reading as bad guys but Boatman strikes the correct pitch each time. A sad ending to a great series, but a fitting one...Easy's place is secured in ten novels and he doesn't become a caricature (like Spenser), having thirty plus stories on a shelf.
