Publisher's summary

From former Delta Force commander and New York Times bestselling author of Kill Bin Laden comes the first novel in an explosive new series

After September 11, 2001, Delta Force troop commander Dalton Fury was given the secret mission to hunt down and kill the most wanted man in the world, the details of which were recounted in his extraordinary New York Times best-seller Kill Bin Laden. Now, Fury draws upon his hard-won combat experience - and his gift for true-to-life storytelling - to offer a brand-new series of thrillers that are as close to reality as readers can get.

Meet Kolt Raynor. A Delta Force operator and one-time American hero, he is still trying to make sense of his life - and duty - after a secret mission gone bad. Three years ago, in the mountains of Pakistan, Raynor made a split-second decision to disobey orders - one that got some of his teammates killed and the rest captured. Now he’s been given a second chance to do right by his country, his men, and himself. But Raynor’s shot at redemption comes at a price.

A shadowy group of former colleagues has asked Raynor to return, alone, to Pakistan’s badlands. His assignment seems clear: find his missing men and bring them home. What Raynor never expected was to uncover a sinister al Qaeda plot to capture a Black Site - a secret U.S. prison - and destabilize the region. Meanwhile, a ruthless, unknown enemy is on his trail… and he will stop at nothing to make sure that Raynor’s mission is not accomplished. An intense, gritty work of edge-of-your-seat suspense, Black Site is the first of what promises to be one of the most exciting fiction series of the new millennium.

Very excited for the next book in this new series!

Truly enjoyed reading this book. The author made the characters feel real, and the plot was plausible.

Good if you can tolerate the hostility

Easy to listen to, interesting, exciting.

My one gripe with these books is that the animosity and hostility toward Kolt Raynor by, well, just about everyone, gets old fast. So many people seem to resent him, don't respect him, and some even hate him.

But you can't really blame them. He is, just as they accuse, a reckless a**hole.
He's irreverent, unapologetic except in his own head, and doesn't seem to care about the possible consequences of his actions or the danger he puts others in. He thinks about it AFTER. After things go wrong and it's too late. But, guess what, it's too late. And then he wallows in self-recrimination and guilt.

But for some reason, he's still determined to be a reckless asshole. You'd think he'd have learned his lesson after he got his team killed and his best friend and co. captured. But no.
I'm sorry, a career military man and delta operative that can't handle criticism and can't follow a direct order? Especially after what happened?
That seems odd.

And he doesn't seem to care what anyone else thinks either. It's him against the world. F you if you aren't on my side. Which I find weird. Isn't that whole community supposed to be built around teamwork and loyalty?
His attitude and actions seem in contrast to all the other stories I've heard about the special forces.

The constant dynamic of Kolt behaving like a belligerent and petulant child and everyone else treating him as such just raises the anxiety level of the whole story by several notches for me. But not in an exciting way. An eye-rolling, cringe-worthy, disappointing way.
Both because I just get tired of people arguing and shouting at each other and also because you keep thinking to yourself "Oh no, not again. What the F are you doing, you idiot?! Do you EVER learn your lesson?"

I keep waiting for him to do the right thing: do what he's told, stop being convinced that he knows better than everyone else. To swallow his pride and apologize, to explain something calmly and logically and not lash out defensively every time he's challenged. To not make most personal interactions worse by how he handles them.
To just not keep making the same mistake over and over and over.
To make a friend, for Chr** sake. And he doesn't. He's not a likeable character. Makes it really hard to "be on his side".

You want him to succeed, of course, and he usually does. But that doesn't end up making up for the air of hostility that permeates the story. It taints it for me. A lot of people might not notice. Some might even like the bad boy, rebellious maverick aspect of it. But if you like these as hero stories, you might have the same issue that I did.

I like the brotherhood aspect of these Tier One type books. To have that almost completely absent… in fact, almost the opposite, detracts from my enjoyment of it probably more than it should.

It's well written, though. Otherwise well balanced. And the narrator does a good job. I kept listening to it, even though I was often uncomfortable and it was hard to be emotionally invested in the story.

Great introduction to a new hero series

This a really good book and a nice introduction to a new character. It is nice to see a main character with flaws and vices and how he tries to battle them while still depended on to perform his tasks that are asked of him.

Thrill ride!

Loved this book! The fact that it's written by someone with experience in the military, as opposed to someone who wishes they had experience in the military makes a difference.
