As a new witch - not to mention owner of Savannah's most enchanting bakery - Katie Lightfoot is still getting used to casting spells, brewing potions, and mastering her magical powers. But that doesn't mean she can't find time to enjoy a picnic with firefighter Declan McCarthy...until she stumbles upon a corpse.
The dead man's tattoo reveals he was a member of a secret society - and it turns out he's missing an object that was very important to the group. When Katie learns the killer was after more than the man's life, she and her Aunt Lucy leave the baked goods on the rack to cool and set off in hot pursuit of a killer.

"This paranormal cozy takes on a decidedly thriller overtone midstream. This is just what it needs to break out of the witchcraft tutorial mode that threatens to stall Cates's second title in her promising series. Partner this with Juliet Blackwell's Witchcraft Mystery series." (Library Journal)
Spell Binding Fun!
Katie. I find baking to be very cathartic and I love her approach to cooking and magic.
Yes, I wanted to, but life gets in the way!
I loved this book, and hope the third book in this series will be posted soon!!
I missed the upbeat energy of Johanna Parker, the reader of Brownies and Broomsticks, but Amy Rubinate did a fine job, with consistent voices for the individual characters. The only issue I really have with her reading quality is the fairly frequent tone that seems either like a "snarky" quality or a "come hither" tone, depending on the situation, and this is not always an appropriate type tone, which got a bit annoying at times. Got past that, and the book is a fun read/listen. Am about to dive into book 3.
what happened to Johanna Parker?!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Johanna Parker was the first narrator of the series, then the series had to switch to Bailey Cates, who cannot narrate. Ms. Cates has such a monotone voice, when listening to my audiobook while doing home chores: washing dishes, I practically fall into my dish soap. Please bring Ms. Parker back ASAP!
Seeing Ms. Cates can only read w/ once voice, all the characters sound alike, but if I could discern, I think I could choose Lucy...she's so kick-back and positive.
The performance could have been better if Ms. Cates took acting courses to perfect her reading ability, which takes acting skills. Most good professional readers have been actores.

I would recommend this book in print form, not audio. I find this author fun and I enjoy my time spent in her work. I don't enjoy Ms Rubinates performance, & I tried coming back in different moods & times of day. She didn't bring the dialects from Haiti & Ohio plus the different southern dialects that are found throughout the southeast to justice. Actually, she murdered the Haitian so badly & the unenthusiastic way she has of speaking drives me nuts right now. But I've like her in other stuff. Really.
Mimsey, Declan, & Katy are my favorites.
Well I got the kindle version so I could finish it. Take that for what it means to you.
Have always loved books and I find that as I have gotten older I find this way more enjoyable then listening to the radio.
the story seemed to drag on and lacked some of the insight into katie that the 1st book had. also Katie's love triangle is going on to long I would love to see her steve now. The stuff in the bakery was great but more passion is needed for the next book
no..i did not like it as much as the 1st
more passion and not sound like she's bored
as of right now no I can't
want to hear the next book, because i like the idea so I hope it's better.
Good second book if you like the genre. I listened to this book shortly after the first and was stunned at the night and day difference in narrators. Knowing that this narrator performs following books I doubt I'll continue the series. :(
Enjoyed the romantic triangle between Kate and her two suitors. The introduction of a Druid group was also a fun touch and sets up for future stories.
