Publisher's summary

Most careers begin with an interview and a handshake. Others require a little something more.

Meet Jake Oliver. The day will come when he's one of the best cleaners in the business, a man skilled at making bodies disappear. At the moment, however, he's a 22-year-old rookie cop, unaware his life is about to change. In a burning barn a body is found - and the fire isn't the cause of death. The detectives working the case have a pretty good idea about what went down. But Officer Oliver thinks it's something else entirely, and pursues a truth others would prefer remain hidden - others who will go to extreme lengths to keep him quiet.

Every identity has an origin. This is Quinn's.

Excellent origin story

very believable story getting the character from here to there. So sorry he lost the one person who understood him. Seems like that odds a sadness that he will carry on with him

Backstory Becoming of Brevity /Narration Solid

Scott Brick is as solid as always, so nothing to say there.

As a big fan of the cleaner series, I was disappointed by Quinn’s backstory…not the story itself, but the brevity of it. I don’t want to risk any spoilers in this review, so I’ll just say that it felt like Battles could have done better (more). Quinn is a complex character with layers of history that have been developed and peeled back throughout the series. Because of this, I expected more substance to his backstory.

If you’re a fan of Quinn and the cleaner books, then this is a good read since you get a little more of Jake’s past. For me, it didn’t contribute much to the series as a whole.

Glad I started with the prequel

Now I'm ready to delve into the series. I almost always like Scott Brick's narration (yes, there have been some exceptions), so that's what prompted me to try a new (for me) author. It was a good move.

Prequel to a Great Series

When will other authors and publishers realize what Brett Battles and Nelson DeMille, as well as others, have already...? Scott Brick is the best in the business of narration. I intentionally search for books that he narrates for my next purchase. That's how I found the Jonathan Quinn series. So glad I did.

Trust Your Gut

Wow, from the very start, Jake trusted his intuition in appreciating details around him. What others required months, if not years, Jake seemed to have in "spades", when it came to logical conclusions. So glad he grabbed on to a new career, once given the chance. Hated to have the story end but nice knowing more is out there!

Quinn explained

I usually don't like books from series that go back in time because I feel like I know the ending. This one was different. It helped to gain greater insight into the main character.

Good book with lots of surprises

I really enjoyed this book. I have not read any books from this author before. Bought it on Audible recommendation and it is well worth the money.
