"It's 1928, and the very unconventional Phryne Fisher sparkles with wit and champagne elegance ... Stephanie Daniel performs with genteel ease. Her upper-class Australian accents and her wild assortment of reputable and disreputable characters are truly amazing ... must listening." (AudioFile Magazine)
It's right up there with all of the other wonderful Phryne Fisher books I've listened to as audio books.
Oh, my yes! The suspense was in every scene and the characters are so likable (the good ones) that you very much care what becomes of them.
She's a terrific actress and when she's reading a man's part, I forget she's a woman, and she does all of the accents to a T.
Oh, gosh, too many parts! I'd have to give the plot away if I named them all!
I'd recommend this series to any fan of cross-cultural historical mysteries, Agatha Christie, Tommy and Tuppence and you also learn a lot about Australia and its history in the course of the story.
How the characters come alive
Mysteries all through the story
In the magazine office when Phryne first arrives
Its already been made into a TV series, the Miss Fisher Mysteries on the ABC
I have purchased further books in the Miss Fisher Mystery series - all excellent.
The narrator's voice sounded precious, and the main character and her set-up seemed twee. Just couldn't get into this one, although I wanted to. Take this review with a grain of salt, but do listen to the listening sample for a good 10 minutes to see if the narrator's voice is what you like.
"Jolly good fun"
I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and while I do my tasks I like to listen to audio books. My current favourite is the Phryne Fisher series! The books are well read and the mysteries and characters are entertaining without being too grim! Some of the more sensual scenes mean that I have to make sure I am not listening with my 6 year old in the room.
So far this is my favourite book in this series. Phryne Fisher as always leaves me feeling that I wish I have lived in her time and place and that I could have been that brave.
Kerry Greenwood explains this book at the start, and it is good to hear the author reading this part.
This book has two stories within the one you have the death of a writer and the more about Lin Chung.
I became engrossed and very attached to all in this book and wanted to Phryne ?to get her man?
While worth a listen whether you are a first timer, or are just not taken with this book, its a lot better than in may first sound, and I am left with the wish that I could write just to be able to kill people off!
