Publisher's Summary

In this electrifying thriller by New York Times best seller Linda Castillo, Kate Burkholder must uncover a family's long-hidden past to solve a brutal murder.

When a tornado tears through Painters Mill and unearths human remains, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder finds herself tasked with the responsibility of identifying the bones - and notifying the family. Evidence quickly emerges that the death was no accident, and Kate finds herself plunged into a 30-year-old case that takes her deep into the Amish community to which she once belonged.

Meanwhile, turmoil of an emotional and personal nature strikes at the very heart of Kate's budding relationship with state agent John Tomasetti. A reality that strains their fragile new love to the breaking point and threatens the refuge they've built for themselves - and their future.

Under siege from an unknown assailant - and her own personal demons - Kate digs deep into the case only to discover proof of an unimaginable atrocity, a plethora of family secrets and the lengths to which people will go to protect their own.

    "Awful and Dreary"

This book does not have much of a plot (at least nothing that grabs your attention). The narrator is terrible. It is like being read to by your not very interested teacher at school. And as others have mentioned there is SO MUCH repetition. I've been trying to finish it, but I have given up. I'm just not that curious about what is going to happen to put myself through listening to the rest.

Poorly written, slow and dull, trite language. I can't get into it & won't finish it.

    "Great!"

I love all of Linda Castello's books! This is no exception. It is written in a setting that is my hometown area & makes reference to roads and places I know.

"Of course another GREAT book and performance !!!"

The worst part about reading/listening to a GREAT book/reading series is the wait til the next one comes out. My Wife and I listened to Kathleen read Linda's words while digging the foundation for a storage shed on our property in 100 + degree weather in south Texas--certainly made the time pass quicker--sometimes our breaths' quickening with the story line. Ms Castillo's words, descriptions and plot are phenomenal and Ms McInerney's inflections, cadence and voice make it sound like a true friend relaying the story to you first hand. Come on Linda, get your team cracking with the next chapter in the Chief's life--PLEASE!

    "Adnausium"

This is the worst of this series.
The first few chapters were whiney and juvenile. Throughout the entire book I wondered why the author felt it necessary to explain every single thing as though speaking to idiots. In this day and age of television and the Internet, the listener does not have to be told what CSI or CSU stands for. As for the Pennsylvania Dutch, not everything needs to be interpreted.

    "Once again great book"

As always I love the Kate Burkholder series and this was no different. Yes, it was predictable to the reader and not to the ones tracking down the case...that's the way it always works. I was screaming at them to see the obvious. Sickening the way people use religion to justify murder. Every religion has its fanatics.

I love how Kate and John's relationship is evolving and trying to move on with their lives despite all the pain and past traumas.

"Book 7 in the series was my 1st Kate b. read"

I must have picked this up at an Audible sale . I wish when Audible has a sale that includes serialized novels they would take the OBVIOUS step of putting the FIRST book in series on sale. heck I assumed it WAS the first, sigh. Off to buy the first and play catch-up now but wanted to give u a heads-up that I really enjoyed my first Castillo offering. Flawless narration, she has a soothing timbre to her voice, very modulated and controlled and with a solid grasp of the English language as well as Pennsylvania Dutch too boot! I have always admired different religions and of course the more secretive the more my curiosity is piqued. Castillo's main character deftly and adroitly performs the balancing act of both recognizing how insular and claustrophobic but yet beautiful and rich the Amish life can be, and as I am a big fan of mysteries featuring a female sleuth, Castillo has delivered a rich and well-rounded time that is a gift as satisfying as a Thanksgiving meal cooked to perfection, followed up with a nice slab of pumpkin pie with whipped topping! :)

"Another can't stop listening by Linda Castillo"

I've enjoyed everyone of her books, both for her writing style & that the story is set about 30 from where I grew up. The fact that when she describes some of the establishments that are so similar to the ones I saw, makes the story more real to me. My very favorite Christmas decoration came fro one of the tourist shops owned by an Amish family. It was Santa, hat in hand, kneeling on one knee to worship the baby Jesus.
