Story
The incomparable master of the legal thriller takes us deeper into the labyrinth that is the American justice system, always drawing us in with an irresistible hook, pulling the thread of tension tighter and tighter, and then knocking us out with a conclusion that's never "by the book". Maybe that's why, after more than 20 years of consecutive number-one New York Times best sellers, a new novel by America's favorite storyteller is still a major publishing event.

It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia. Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars.

Publisher's summary
A Time to Kill:
The life of a 10-year-old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime, until her father acquires an assault rifle and takes justice into his own outraged hands.
For 10 days, with burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spreading through the streets of Clanton, Mississippi, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jack Brigance struggles to save his client's life...and then his own.
The King of Torts:
When Clay Carter of the public defender's office reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit D.C. every week. But as he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession's newest king of torts.

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

The incomparable master of the legal thriller takes us deeper into the labyrinth that is the American justice system, always drawing us in with an irresistible hook, pulling the thread of tension tighter and tighter, and then knocking us out with a conclusion that's never "by the book". Great Long Listen (2 books for 1 credit)
First, I really enjoy John Grisham's legal thrillers so I was pleased to get 2 titles for 1 credit. I recently bought his new book A Time For Mercy but realized I didn't have a proper background of the infamous attorney Jake Brigance. A Time to Kill is a starting point to present a case for the type of attorney Jake Brigance is. Overall, the details from the beginning of the crime, to the court hearings, and life changing events for every character were well written and narrated. This is a crazy criminal and racial case that had me on the edge for most of the book especially the closing arguments and final verdict.
I never had intentions of reading The King of Torts, but I liked the story. It gave me a better picture of who and what 'Mass Tort Lawyers' are. I liked the main character, Clay Carter, and found that I could relate with decisions. This novel is not as much of a thriller, yet some of the scenarios that Clay is put in might be intense briefly, but it is not as great as other novels by John Grisham. The ending is also anti-climatic - more like lets just end this book and be done with it. To conclude this review, I would only recommend if you like to listen to legal themed book and can be 2 things at once without paying much attention to the detail of the book.

Another great Grisham novel.
First off, I'm biased. I haven't read a John Grisham novel that I didn't like. it is very easy to get personally involved with the characters of his stories. My only repsponse is, "More please".

I used to read often when I was younger then after getting this audio book I remembered why. I always end up with a good book that I can’t put down or in this case turn off. A time to kill is a masterful piece of literature. I had never seen to film or heard of the book until downloading. I was disappointed in the movie because the details in the book are so great. As I listened I was there in Clanton Mississippi.

Two excellent stories by Grisham, but Time to A Kill is the better of the two. It is a stark and grim tale from beginning to end, captivating, compelling, and completely worthwhile.

A Time to Kill 4.5 King of Torts 4
A Time to Kill is a great novel based on a very horrible event. I don’t care so much for the main attorney he’s arrogant and cocky. However the overall theme of the book is good and well written.
King of Torts is not your typical legal thriller. There was really nothing thriller about it. It was A book that painted class action attorneys as greedy pigs who get so fat they get slaughtered. I’m sure like all professions there are hogs, but there are many that actually make changes in the law for the benefit of the people. This book tracks the rise of a young lawyer based on greed and dissatisfaction as a public defender. He grew hoggish like the rest of the attorneys depicted. The book is more of a moral type novel and nothing more. I do not want to give a spoiler but if you are looking for a thriller or court room excitement this will not give it to you. It was entertaining enough, and I did listen to it though there were times I did fast forward a few scenes. Very fantastical plot of how this lawyer got his break, but you forget that fast.
