Publisher's summary

Clanton, Mississippi. The life of a 10-year-old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime. Until her father acquires an assault rifle - and takes justice into his own outraged hands. For 10 days, with burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spreading through the streets of Clanton, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jake Brigance struggles to save his client's life...and then his own....

Critic reviews

"Grisham's pleasure in relating the Byzantine complexities of Clanton (Mississippi) politics is contagious and he tells a good story.... An enjoyable book." (Library Journal)

"Grisham excels!" (Dallas Times Herald)

Featured Article: Christmas with the Kranks—Book vs. Movie

John Grisham may be best known for his legal thrillers, but he's also been known to deviate from form every now and then and write something completely different. Skipping Christmas is one such book. It was adapted into a 2004 film called Christmas with the Kranks, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, which gained the story an even wider audience. If you're familiar with the film but don’t know much about its literary inspiration, read on.

Enthralling

Once again, John Grisham does not disappoint. His knowledge of the law and gifted writing weaves a detailed human story filled with memorable characters. The reader was wonderful and as always crucial to an excellent audible experience. Start to finish enthralling.

Gripping

The story was gripping from beginning to end. I thought, since this was originally written years ago, that it would sound dated. And maybe even be boring compared to all the books, tv shows, & movies we all have at our fingertips. But it just goes to show that the story itself is the meat of a book.

The performance was excellent. There were many characters, both male and female, and most of them unique. Also there were a lot of accents that had to be different in subtle ways. For example, there are characters in this book that were raised in different states, or went to college out of their home state, etc. But not all accents in the southern states are the same. TN is different from MO which is different from AL which is different from TX which is different from KY and so on. So: accents, pitch, texture, volume of the characters' voices were all really well done!

Now I'm going to read every book written by this author, if I haven't already. 😊

Been a while

I forgot how truly great this book is. I couldn't get it at my local library but now I'm glad I used a credit on it. Will listen to it again someday
