Publisher's summary

Nevada Barr quickly attracted the attention of mystery fans when her first Anna Pigeon mystery, Track of the Cat, appeared. Now she immerses the intrepid park ranger in a perilous search that will take her far below the waters of Lake Superior. As Anna spends her days patrolling its shores, the surface of Lake Superior fills with tourists. In the depths below lie an ancient ship and the bones of its sailors. But when two tourists dive down to see the wreck, they discover that a new body has joined the skeletal crew. As Anna tries to discover how and why, she encounters secrets darker and more deadly than the waters surrounding the corpse. Filled with suspense, A Superior Death is also laced with Anna Pigeon's self-deprecating humor. With Barbara Rosenblat's spirited narration, you'll immediately be scanning the splendid setting and looking for clues through the eyes of the savvy naturalist.

"She [Anna Pigeon] is a captivating, daredevil detective whose adventures will delight mystery readers." (School Library Journal)
"Barr, a park ranger, provides plenty of authentic details about life in the great outdoors, and her deft plotting and appealingly quirky characters give her story plenty of punch. Anna Pigeon is tough-minded, strong, sensitive, vulnerable, and funny." (Booklist)

Smart Woman, Dumb Decisions

While I like reading about smart, strong female characters, I expect that intelligent woman make mostly good decisions. Anna took crazy risks for no apparent reason except to make the story more exciting.

These books also put the US Park Service in very poor light, from paying park rangers less than a living wage to covering for a park ranger guilty of child sexual abuse in several different states. How sad!

Engaging, good read

Barbara Rosenblat has once again brought the character of Anna Pigeon to life. The plot, location and characters are very enjoyable. This is one of my favorites from the series.

Fun romp through a rugged landscape

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Fun easy listen, I learned a great deal about the technical components of humans underwater.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Superior Death?

The main character, Anna Pigeon, is a great protagonist-park-ranger-mystery-solver.

What about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance did you like?

She was relatable and personified the characters, brought them to life. I would listen to other books by her for sure.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Potentially, if I was a person who did that. But I've never done that ever! It was compelling though.

Can Pidgeon hole Anna Pidgeon.

This is the second Anna Pidgeon book I've listened to, but I still don't understand this heroine/Park Ranger, but I like her. She's WAY tough. Still looking for more of her softer side. I've already bought Book 3.

Anna Pigeon mysteries aren't the best

If you have never read a book in the Anna Pigeon Series by Nevada Barr, you are in for a treat.

The series takes place in various National Parks and feature Anna Pigeon, a Park Ranger. There is mystery, suspense, intrigue and fun in every book. In an ideal world you’d read them in order although, it’s not really as critical here as it is in some series. I’ve jumped around based on 2 things: 1) my interest in the area 2) availability at the library. I’ve read all of the books on audio and enjoyed them immensely, the reader does a great job. Every Anna Pigeon book that I have read has been at least a 4 star read.

A Superior Death takes place in my home state of Michigan, on Isle Royale National Park and Lake Superior (the largest, deepest and the coldest of the Great Lakes). There are many ship wrecks in that area including the Kamloops, a vessel that sunk in 1927 with 5 sailors on board. The summers on the Isle are filled with tourists, many of whom enjoying diving near the wrecks. When some divers discover an additional body among one of the wrecks, Anna must discover who it is and how and why it got there.

Part mystery, part adventure story the book, like all Anna Pigeon stories, is a well-written page turner-full of twists and turns. “No wonder man was always out to conquer Nature, Anna thought. He can’t bear it that she doesn’t love him, or even hate him. She simply doesn’t give a damn.”

A Superior Death is book #2 in the series. Thus far I have read: Destroyer Angel #18, Liberty Falling #7, Blood Lure #9, Burn #16, Deep South #8, and Hunting Season #10. The theme is similar throughout the series - whether Anna is on duty or just visiting. The locations and other characters vary by book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First in the series better

Not as good as her first book. Story dragged a little bit, less interesting setting.

Lake Superior is a character

This is the first book I have read in the Anna Pigeon series. I bought it on Audible because it is set in one of my favorite places in the world: Lake Superior. I really loved the descriptions of life on the lake, which agreed with my experiences of being there. I liked that the heroine is a park ranger who uses her knowledge of science and nature to solve a mystery.

Excellent story, with some gum chewing.

I love these books. The descriptive writing is great. Just the right amount of sex, blood and intrigue. But the narrator is either sucking on a throat lozenge or chewing gum part of the time.
