Six weeks before she is due to take up her position as the first female head of MI6, Amelia Levene vanishes without a trace. Her disappearance is the gravest crisis MI6 has faced for more than a decade. There has been no ransom demand, no word from foreign intelligence services, and no hint of a defection. Should news of Levene’s disappearance leak out, the consequences would be catastrophic. But for disgraced MI6 officer Thomas Kell, the crisis offers a chance for redemption. He is approached by his former employers and ordered to find her. Kell’s search takes him first to France, then North Africa, where he discovers an extraordinary secret hidden deep in Levene’s past. It is a secret that could fatally compromise Britain’s national security - and for which Kell could pay with his life.
This is another first-rate intelligent thriller which will cement Cumming's reputation as one of the most engaging British novelists writing today.

"The master of the modern spy thriller' and ‘heir to le Carré returns with another gripping and suspenseful novel." (Guardian)
Love having someone read me a story. Fires in the hearth, rain on the roof, sunny days and surf. Good friends, good food and J S Bach.
Great writing and good story
I hope Audible manages to get more for us,from this author with Jot Davies reading for us.
For now, avoid downloading any other than top format as part 2 seems to be lost on 4 and 3. I think I have 6 part 1 as I tried to get part 2 without avail.
I enjoyed The Trinity Six and this is even better
As Charles Cumming is a widely acclaimed author who is well respected, I am surprised that there are so few Audible listeners. It may reflect the great divide of the pond in storytelling even if the UK and US are much closer than people know in other ways.
Bought this after reading a review in the Sunday Telegraph. The plot was excellent, characters well defined and believable, and narration very good. I will definitely look for more by this author/narrator, and would highly recommend.
Great book with the right degree of suspense and pace. Can't wait to read Cumming's next thriller!

Chosen because I enjoyed Jot Davies' reading of The Trinity Six. Cumming is a new writer to me but I shall seek out other books by him because the two I have listened to have kept me intrigued. Jot Davies is the perfect reader in my opinion. He reads at the speed I would read in my head (some readers are slow which is really Irritating). His take on a number of different accents helps define the differing roles and characters and is convincing enough without sounding put on. I will also look for other books read by Jot for this reason.
Superbly read, written and plotted. This was a new author to me but I will not hesitate to listen/read others by him. It was very believable - which is always a difficult job to achieve for an author of a spy thriller. Buy it and enjoy it!
"Classic spy novel"
Great plot, strong characters and intelligent, pacy read. I loved it. Started the next book straight away.
"Best spy novel for a long time"
With logical twists and turns, this is perhaps the best novel I've listened to for quite some time. Well deserving of 5 stars.
"A better quality of espionage romp"
I enjoyed A Foreign Country, it offers a seeing on less traveled road of European espionage.
It is not a Smiley novel from le Carre, but it is a well structured and enjoyable thriller. Some may even prefer that.
The premise and some of the plot devices are perhaps far fetched, but if you can overlook that you have an enjoyable thriller on your hands.
The narration is good, although occasionally the voice of Kell didn't quite ring true for me. Or is well edited with no issues around levelling or sound quality.
"slow burner that gets good"
bit of a slow start but picks up well. sometimes guilty of purple prose but a decent romp none the less.
"Great Modern Spy Thriller"
Twisting, interesting, well-written, well-narrated.
This is a great modern-take on the old spy thriller. It is really well-written and Jot Davies' narration is wonderful. Thankfully it doesn't (SPOILER ALERT) end with colossal explosions and lengthy descriptions of pain and torture or further dreadful cliche's. It is thoughtful, compelling and wonderful entertainment for nine hours.
The narration was superb. It did require quite a few foreign accents. Some were better than others! (I think his Italian character slipped a few times - apart from that well done!!) But it was narrated at a good pace with wonderful intonation and warmth.
It was really compelling. I really wanted to listen more. The characters were well thought-out and the plot zipped along nicely. Some moments were genuinely funny. And there was some emotion. But it was more about the plot and the quality of the writing - the descriptions, thoughts and the thrill of espionage - that made this book.
Really enjoyed it. Good characters. Great plot. The first Charles Cumming book I've downloaded. Will definitely download more.
