Publisher's summary

Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch is up to his neck in a case that has transfixed all of celebrity-mad Los Angeles: a movie director is charged with murdering an actress during sex, and then staging her death to make it look like a suicide. Bosch is both the arresting officer and the star witness in a trial that has brought the Hollywood media pack out in full-throated frenzy.

Meanwhile, Terry McCaleb is enjoying an idyllic retirement on Catalina Island when a visit from an old colleague brings his former world rushing back. It's a murder, the unreadable kind of murder he specialized in solving back in his FBI days. The investigation has stalled, and the sheriff's office is asking McCaleb to take a quick look at the murder book to see if he turns up something they've missed.

McCaleb's first reading of the crime scene leads him to look for a methodical killer with a taste for rituals and revenge. As his quick look accelerates into a full-sprint investigation, the two crimes - his murdered loner and Bosch's movie director - begin to overlap strangely. With one unsettling revelation after another, they merge, becoming one impossible, terrifying case, involving almost inconceivable calculation. McCaleb believes he has unmasked the most frightening killer ever to cross his sights. But his investigation tangles with Bosch's lines, and the two men find themselves at odds in the most dangerous investigation of their lives.

Don't miss Detective Harry Bosch on the case in these Michael Connelly crime fiction novels.

Another great book for Michael Connelly.

Another powerful book from Michael Connelly up there with his best. Really enjoyable. This book pairs two of Michael Connelly detectives from previous books Terry McCaleb and Bosch. I have never read a Terry McCaleb book before and quite enjoyed his character in this book, the Bosch character was great, but took a bit of a back seat to Terry in this book.

This book has plenty of twists and turns and stays a bit more believable than most of Mr Connolly's books. I think this is a must listen for Michael Connelly fans, but I would suggest listening to the early books in the Bosch series first.

The Narrator was a bit of a mixed bag, I almost skipped this book based on some of the reviews in relation to this narrator, however the book is so good I am so glad I took the gamble. After listening to other Narrators in the Bosch series, he initially sounded all wrong and grated on me for the first hour or so, then I got used to him. I found the Narrator's performance of Bosch very irritating at first, the narrator makes Bosch sound as if he is 70.

However after the first hour or so the irritations went away and I started to enjoy the narrator's ability to help build the suspense and his more precise pronunciation in places. He will never be my favourite Narrator but I don't think it is worth skipping this book based on his narration.

Disappointing

The story itself was very good, however Mr Davidson made Harry to sound like a burn out. After listening to the first 5 books with Mr Hill, this one was a let down.

Pretty Good Listen

If you like the author, you'll like this one. Written in his typical to-the-point style, the story is good and offers an interesting plunge into the "dark side" of human nature.

Worst Narrator Ever

I am working through the Bosch novels and have enjoyed them all so far. This plot line is interesting and I am enjoying the Terry McCaleb character. However, I can only listen in small doses and may give-up entirely because the narrator is TERRIBLE!! Harry sounds like an old man. The inflections are all wrong. The narrator seems to have no feel for the Bosch character. Is there a performance rating less than 1 star because that’s what this deserves. I doubt I’ll finish the book.

Perhaps my Favorite Bosch Book

This book was so much fun. I love it when Titus narrates Bosch. I love the continuing development of Renee Ballard. The cases were great, mixing a cold case with new crimes. Also the trip into crimes against women was responsible, compassionate. What I missed was contact with Maddy though she has a right to grow up. The thing I liked most was the glimpse into what is possible when the TV series moves from Amazon to IMDB. THANKS, Michael Connelly, for not going stale on us!

I enjoyed the narrator!

I started off reading The Lincoln Lawyer series and then read a couple of Bosch books with Mickey Haller. I then decided to read the Bosch books in order. Based on the reviews of the narrator of this book I skipped it, and read the remainder of the Bosch books in order. I then decided to go back and listed to A Darkness More Than Night. I wish I hadn't of skipped it! First of all I would have had a better understanding of several of the other books had I read this one. Secondly, I liked the narrator! I even liked him much better than Christine Lakin! Of course he is not Titus Welliver, but I enjoyed listening to him! So, don't let the bad narrator reviews stop you from listening to this book, you may just like it! The story was great! I thoroughly enjoyed the book!

2 Main Characters

After ready Bloodwork I’d become familiar with Retired FBI agent Terry McCaleb. Having BOSch as part of the plot made the story so exciting. Very happy I didn’t miss this book. Now back to the next, solo, BOSch story.
