Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - This was my first time listening to a legal thriller, and I can safely say I’m hooked. I had always shied away from the genre, assuming that the plots were too fantastical – but this story has a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, creating a relevancy that will attract both newbies like me and established thriller fans. Mitzner delivers a character driven narrative, while seamlessly blending romance, criminal law, and suspense, keeling me guessing until the very end. Kevin T. Collins does a marvelous job narrating – the emotion that he pours into each character captivated me from the start. I felt all of the triumphs and setbacks of the case, and I found myself deeply invested in its outcome. I really hope that this duo works together again, but in the meantime I’m going hunting for more from both the author and the narrator. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The second electrifying thriller from the "gifted writer" (Publishers Weekly) and author of A Conflict of Interest.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Critic reviews

"Mitzner's courtroom drama is Grisham-like in suspenseful before-the-bench action....a wicked ride, with more loops and flips than Coney Island's Cyclone." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Ah, the crucible of the courtroom! Adam Mitzner understands its appeal so very well. Devotees of legal suspense will find themselves happily at home, zinging with the intrigue, reeling with the twists, and ultimately well fed with a satisfying (if shocking) resolution. And if you've been away from the fictional halls of justice for too long, A CASE OF REDEMPTION is where you need to come back." (Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full)

Sensational twists and turns and spellbinding plot

Where does A Case of Redemption rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Right at the top

What did you like best about this story?

The total surprise at the end.

What does Kevin T. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His ability to define characters, mood, were outstanding. This was more like being a fly on the wall than "reading"

Any additional comments?

I hope Adam Mitzner writes more and Kevin Collins is his reader. A dynamite combination!
Wish I'd read his first book before his 2nd but I'll certainly keep him as a favorite author.

Surprise Ending

I don't normally get taken by surprise at the ending of books. Normally I can figure out which direction the story will go. This was a surprise to me which I enjoyed very much.

John Grisham w a better ending

If you like John Grisham you will like this author. In depth discussion of law. Unlike Grisham though the ending is well thought out. Narrator is very good too

It was OK

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Did I enjoy listening to the book? For the most part. It was entertaining. But plot turns are abrupt and the ending was unsatisfying. The most interesting moments are spent in the courtroom. Mitzner should spend more time there in his next book.

Would you recommend A Case of Redemption to your friends? Why or why not?

Not really. There are better books out there.

Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?

The main character is the only fully developed character - easily the best one.

Was A Case of Redemption worth the listening time?

Yes. But not memorable.

Any additional comments?

Mitzner's courtroom descriptions were good. Spend more time there.

Average

It was okay. Not something I'd pick again or re-listen. Seems the story line was short so there was a lot of fill.

A very mixed bag

A Case of Redemption is well written, interesting and engrossing for about the first two thirds. The story still holds your interest, but the courtroom passages are totally bogus and the ending is unconvincing. Kevin Collins’ narration is often over-dramatic but well done on the whole.

Good story; sappy at times

If you could sum up A Case of Redemption in three words, what would they be?

Sappy legal story

What did you like best about this story?

The legal jargon and the descriptions of the characters were great. The story itself has lulls when it gets sappy. But overall, solid book.

Zero on the Credulity Meter

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. The book held my interest enough to finish it, but it could have been cut by a third--just too wordy in places, as in the first third when Dan is introducing himself and his partner to various new characters, we hear the same introduction word-for-word, over and over. My major criticism, however, was that the plot was implausible. As the book unfolded, important facts about some of the main characters turned out to be lies or evasions. As truth revealed itself, the plot would take a 180-degree turn, and I began to doubt every fact as it was introduced.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending offers another twist, but by the time I got there, I was feeling manipulated by surprises the writer threw at me over and over. If he had kept it to one or two, the ending might have had more impact.

Have you listened to any of Kevin T. Collins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. I thought this performance was good. Mr. Collins interpreted men's and women's voices equally well and with expression.

Did A Case of Redemption inspire you to do anything?

I doubt that I'll look for another book by this author.

Any additional comments?

Much about the book and the characters was predictable, but I wouldn't have minded the same old story so much if the plot and personae had been more believable.

First law novel was a hit!

Any additional comments?

This was my first time listening to this category and I really enjoyed it! I think people that don't normally listen to legal mysteries would still enjoy this book. The book uses legal terminology but manages to say it in a way that you understand even if you don't know anything about the legal system. There are some parts that you see coming from chapter 1, but hold on because there will be a twist that you don't see! My mouth dropped open during the last chapter! I highly recommend this book!
