Publisher's summary

From celebrated New York Times best-selling author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize Rick Bragg comes a poignant and wryly funny collection of essays on life in the South. Keenly observed and written with his insightful and deadpan sense of humor, Bragg explores enduring Southern truths about home, place, spirit, table, and the regions' varied geographies, including his native Alabama, Cajun country, and the Gulf Coast. Everything is explored, from regional obsessions with college football and fishing to mayonnaise and spoonbread to the simple beauty of a fish on the hook. Collected from over a decade of his writing, with many never-before-published essays written specifically for this edition, My Southern Journey is an entertaining and engaging listen, especially for Southerners (or Southerners at heart) and anyone who appreciates great writing.

Critic reviews

"Rick Bragg says Southern storytellers speak as if they're slowly chewing each word, savoring the sound and meaning. And that's just the way he presents this collection of his published essays.... His use of metaphor and rich descriptions comes across especially effectively when spoken." (AudioFile)

Southern writing at its best.

I never tire of a Rick Bragg story and it is a joy to hear them in his own voice. He makes me laugh, he makes me cry, and wish for one more meal cooked by my grandmother.

Great listening

I was spellbound, not only by the story but by the authers/Rick Bragg telling of those stories. I'm deciding which of his books I will listen to next.

Exceeds 5 stars!

I'd give this collection more than five stars if it were possible! I've enjoyed many of them before, but hearing them in the author's own voice takes them to a deeper level.

Too good for my words...

Rick Bragg makes me laugh and makes me cry. His stories stir up the sweet memories of growing up in the South. This is the only audio book I have that I keep coming back to for the sheer pleasure of his tales.

I could listen to Rick all day long

Although I plan to buy the book, listening to him read this collection of writings and stories gave me such a calm, a peace. His humor and his way with words have captured me for many years. I’m a northerner and I have developed such an appreciation of the south and the southern way of living. I hang on every word, not ever wanting it to end. Will be sharing this on our family road trip through South Carolina. Hope my boys appreciate his writing like I do. Keep the stories coming please.

Excellent!

I really love the stories that Rick Bragg tells. He brings the south to life and because I grew up not far from where he is from, I can relate to them. Southern writing at its best!

A keeper

I love this book. It is soothing and comforting and entertaining and informative and funny. It celebrates the people i come from, the place where I live, and helps me laugh about things that just are. It’s just the best. I’m
So glad Mr. Bragg narrated it himself. It lends an authenticity and realness to it. No one else could do it justice. I love that it’s in short segments-little essays- so if you need a quick pick me up after a bad day, you’ve got one.
This is a real treasure.

Southern

This book reminded me Erma Bombeck, Rick Bragg was not as funny, however the book was informative. I was at times on the edge of my seat awaiting the outcome of some topics like football.

A Baby-Boomers life story

Anyone from 55 to 75 years old can relate to hundreds of things and situations described in these wonderful stories! A very sentimental and funny array of life situations we have mostly forgotten, but needed to be reminded of! Thank you,
