Publisher's summary

"You know the estate far better than I, but one day, you will marry and leave. Then where will I be?” Elizabeth said gently. This admission, true in nearly all ways but one, sent another wave of embarrassment upon Georgiana’s features. However, this time she smiled shyly. “Do you really think so? I mean…marry?” “I think it will be sooner, rather than later, especially from the way Mr. Penwick looks at you.” “I do admit to finding him very agreeable, in all manners. But I wonder…” she replied, but suddenly her voice trailed Staring out across the placid lake, the pleasant smile vanished as her face drained of all its color. Words, caught in her throat as she fought back a scream. “What? What is the matter? Are you ill?” Elizabeth demanded, her eyes going from Georgiana to whatever unknown thing had instilled such terror. At first, no object of any kind appeared to take credit for the change in behavior. Still speechless, Georgiana raised an arm to point down at the water’s edge. It was there that Elizabeth saw what had caused such distress. Half buried in the mud, and nearly obscured by the thick clumps of cattails lay the still form a woman. Dressed in the plain grey serge of a servant, she was face down, her dark hair floating on the waters. It was a gruesome sight to be sure, but it was not the mere sight of death that was so transfixing. Still grasped in a green bloating hand was the hilt of a sword, its blade pointing directly towards Pemberley.
