Mike

A Public School Story

By P. G. Wodehouse

Narrated by Graham Scott

Mike is among Wodehouse's earliest adult novels, and reportedly remained the author's personal favorite throughout his long career. The story follows the adventures of cricketing prodigy Mike Jackson, first at the prestigious Wrykyn public school, where he strives to achieve the unprecedented feat of a place in the First Eleven in his freshman year, and later (when to his father's annoyance Mike's academic performance at Wrykyn fall rather short of his sporting achievements) at Sedleigh, a smaller school with little sporting reputation, where he first encounters the immaculate and unflappable Psmith...

A great combination of two excellent books!

"Mike" is actually the combination of two of Wodehouse's books: "Mike at Wrykyn" and "Mike and Psmith"... While the first half is not the uproariously laugh-fest that you get from Wodehouse, it's still an excellent story (especially for a lover of the sport, Cricket, which I am). The 2nd half has Mike moving (against his wishes) from Wrykyn to a smaller school and there he meets Psmith (the "P" is silent)... Psmith is one of Plum's great characters and this story is far more hilarious than the first one... I'm only sad that Wodehouse didn't write more of Mike and Psmith...

Brilliant pre-WWI public school life

The writing is gently sublime. It's a snapshot of idealized public school life written in almost perfect prose.

Poetic and nostalgic

A beautiful Wodehouse. Such a poetic and long story, filled with unusual moments and characters.
