The use of descriptive language helped to create atmospheric intrigue or "enigma wrapped up in mystery."

Mike is a cold moral sociopath.
Listening to a Mike Hammer novel is like listening to a sociopath superhero who's power is death going through is paces. Shoot first then talk.
