Publisher's summary

Ninety-one-year-old Alice Hoffman died alone in her top floor flat. Social services say she slipped through the cracks in a failing system. But detectives Arthur Bryant and John May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit have their suspicions. Mrs. Hoffman was not as innocent as she appeared. A former government security expert, she had once worked for their own unit, but there's no one left who can remember her. When they uncover a link between her and a diplomat desperate to leave the country, it begins to look as if someone might have committed an impossible murder.

But Mrs. Hoffman wasn't acting alone. Arthur Bryant is convinced that a group of talented women have been working together for decades and now the others are in danger. With the help of some of his more certifiable contacts and historical experts, he and John May embark on an investigation that will lead them down forgotten alleyways to riverside buildings and on to the city's oldest bridge. But just when the case appears to have been solved and unit chief Raymond Land can congratulate everyone on ending a threat to international security, the detectives discover that they've been the victims of the biggest deception of all. For even after her death, Mrs. Hoffman would prove too clever for them....

Bryant & May's 20th anniversary case brings an ending and a new beginning to London's most peculiar crimes unit and all who work there.

Christopher Fowler does it again

I was saddened to learn that Christopher Fowler had passed. I have read every one of his novels. Bryant and May and the whole Peculiar Crimes Team came to life for me and as any really good story should, they made me wish that I could be there in the midst of the action. Unfortunately I had to settle for sitting down with good strong cup of Builders, leaves no bag and milk and immerse myself in the wonderful world Mr Fowler inhabited by quirky characters who were more sane than the rest of the English society around them. Thank you Christopher Fowler for sharing this England, this London with us! Rest in Peace.

I have thoroughly enjoyed these stories

but the audio is so phenomenal strictly due to Tim Goodman's performance of the cast. He has been amazing and has brought these unique characters to life in such a way that you can picture them perfectly. Bravo!!

John May will have bitter/sweet memories

Passionately impressed with the author and narrator of the B&M series. Have read entire opus. This last in the series is letter perfect. Never ever bored!

Another spectacular book

I have enjoyed every one of the Brian and May books. Most I have read but the last few have been on audible. Wonderful books and narration. These are some of the best characters ever.
