Publisher's summary

This is the first of three young adult novels from New York Times best-selling author Mackenzi Lee that explores the untapped potential and duality of heroism of popular characters in the Marvel Universe.

Before the days of going toe-to-toe with the Avengers, a younger Loki is desperate to prove himself heroic and capable, while it seems everyone around him suspects him of inevitable villainy and depravity...except for Amora. Asgard's resident sorceress-in-training feels like a kindred spirit - someone who values magic and knowledge, who might even see the best in him.

But when Loki and Amora cause the destruction of one of Asgard's most prized possessions, Amora is banished to Earth, where her powers will slowly and excruciatingly fade to nothing. Without the only person who ever looked at his magic as a gift instead of a threat, Loki slips further into anguish and the shadow of his universally adored brother, Thor.

When Asgardian magic is detected in relation to a string of mysterious murders on Earth, Odin sends Loki to investigate. As he descends upon 19th-century London, Loki embarks on a journey that leads him to more than just a murder suspect, putting him on a path to discover the source of his power - and who he's meant to be.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Oliver Wyman embodies everyone's favorite trickster god in this exciting origin story for Marvel's Loki of Asgard.... Wyman takes on the central role of Loki with relish, emphasizing his teenaged sarcasm and petulance while subtly exposing the self-doubt underlying them. He excels at the rapid shifts of tone such a changeable character requires. Wyman also creates memorable voices for the supporting characters - from dim but affable Thor and sly sorceress Amora to the plummy accents of England's Sharpe Society members. Listeners will love this magical adventure." (AudioFile magazine)

Pretty good

This was a pretty good little Marvel Loki book. Nothing about it was terribly Marvel however, besides alluding to Loki’s frost-giant heritage. So, pretty fun if you like Loki stuff, and possibly some nice canon backstory pre-Avengers. However there wasn’t anything too amazing or standout about it, and some important plot points were never expanded on.

Is a Marvel book tring to put Loki in a new light

WOW!!!!

As someone who really never writes reviews, I owed it to this story. Wasn’t quite sure what to expect but the voice acting of the narrator it plus the inherently exciting content of this book make it a must read for any Thor/Loki fans. The author presents the duality or Loki without forcing one to call him either good or evil, and masterfully weaves a story that leaves it up to the reader to answer the question.

Loki

This story felt a lot more like a fanfiction than anything actually endorsed by Marvel. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't Loki.

A unexpected delight.

when I picked up the book I had no idea what I was getting myself into. so to my suprise it gave me what I wanted without giving me the ending I expected. kinda sherlock meets marvel. you never really know where the plot will take you just like how loki never truly knows what he wants. Cannot wait for the next one.
